Subject: ELECTRIC FAN IP: Logged
Message: CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO WIRE THE ELEC. FAN SO I CAN RUN IT ALL THE TIME. I HAVE READ ABOUT A FEW POEPLE THAT HAVE REMOVED THE BELT DRIVEN FAN AND RAN THE ELEC. ONE ALL THE TIME. IF IT IS POSSIBLE CAN SOME ONE TELL ME HOW TO DO THIS.

Message: I can run mine all the time as well as let the PCM engage the fan.
This is what I did but it's alot of work.
1. located the fan power wire at the bundle going into the fuse block under the hood. Becarefull doing this if you mistakenly add power to the wrong wire it could do damadge. It was a large solid light green wire. I went under the truck and examined the fan wire to discover this.
2. I striped away the sheathing on the wire and soldered a power wire to it and rewraped the wire and bundle. I originaly ran it inside the cab to a toggle switch then to the cig lighter. The fuse on the cig lighter blew because the fan draws strong amps. It is actually a very powerfull fan. Instead I ran another wire right from the battery to the toggle switch. This means I have 2 wires coming into my cab. I simply punctured two small holes in the gromet and fed the wires through to the toggle. YOU MUST FUSE THE MAIN POWER WIRE AT THE BATTERY. If you don't and there is a short you will start a fire. I plan on running a very large power wire behind the seats with a 100 amp fuse at the battery and multi fuse block in the cab for micellaneous distribution needs like amps etc.
This was my solution allowing the PCM to control the fan for normal operating or allowing me to mannually control for maximum cooling when racing or exsessive idling. This is not a suggestion to do this just a possible solution.

Message: Jeffster, that is similar to where I ran my power, I tapped into the fuse block under the hood, but I added the automatic thermostat control to my electric fan so it only runs when it needs too...I set it to come on about 185-190 degrees...less work than flicking a switch on and off all the time...mine is an Imperial fan.

Message: Mine is still contoled by the PCM's thermostat control. The manual overide is for maximum cooling while idiling in the staging lanes. Even when the temps drop low enough that the T-stat closes it's nice to have all that air blow over the block. It's mainly a race only feature not a switch I fuss with daily.

Message: My 2001 came with an electric fan. It was an auxillerary fan to the clutch fan so is hard wired into the computer. (I assume the computer monitors engine temp's) This is why I had to locate the wire in the main bundle rather than running my own. I simply removed the primary clutch fan alltogether.

Message: Yes I have the 180* T-stat. Generally speaking the temps run at right around 180*. However if left idling for several miniutes the temps will reach around 210* I let the engine idle for about 5 minuites to see when the electric fan would engage and it did so at 210* and cooled down promptly to about 200*. However when moving it's always cool at around 180*. If I manually engage the fan with the switch it will stay at around or just slightly above 180*.

Message: I think so Horbedarn. It definetly idles smoother and running cooler with the t-stat. This along with a little less resistance will translate to some HP gains. I live in Vancouver so also remember the climate is also cooler than most places but as I am sure you have read in other posts others claim no problems even in the Southren states.

What the diameter of the electric fan?
Did you use the stock shroud?
Is there a stock electric fan up close to radiator still and this Imperial is a secondary fan at the opening of the shroud?
V6 or V8?

Message: Kurt, mine is a 98 SLT 2wd 5.2 automatic...
left the original shroud, no the Imperial is the only fan, however, I have decided to add another 16" fan, (that is the size of the one now), to the front of the a/c condenser that will run when the a/c is on...it was getting a little warmer than I wanted today while sitting in Atlanta traffic and the fan could not seem to cool it down without the a/c off...I plan to tow with the truck so I want no probs..
my truck has 60,000 miles and I just inherited it a week ago from my late brother-in-law.

Message: Jeffster, you made a slight mistake wiring your fan. It is powered by a relay. All you had to do was run a small 16 gauge wire to a switch and ground the other end. Find the ground lead on the relay, tap into it, and walla. If it shorted out, the worst you would have is a fan that would not shut off. When you took off your clutch fan, did you have a problem with the pulley on the water pump?
