Subject: Recipe: Low 14's in your 4.7L IP: Logged
Message: I put together a list of what I've done to get to low 14's, Normally Aspirated :) and quite possibly even quicker now :)
First of all, this is a RC 4.7L 5spd, 3.92 posi. Truck weighs 3670 off the showroom floor (3870 W/me)
1. Stock truck, 1000 miles +/-, added traction bars, lowered 2" in rear . Perfected the launch (1100 rpms), and the shift (5000 rpms +/-) and I ran 14.78, with lots of 14.8 & 14.9's.
2. Added my homemade air-intake K&N filter and DOT Hoosier Quicktime Pro slicks (28x11.5). Ran 14.48 after perfecting the MEGA clutch dump at 3500 rpms :) pulls approx 1G, with a 1.88 60' time.
3. Change over to Mobil 1 Synth oil & Lube added the Flowmaster cat back system & Doetch tech shocks. No noticable gain, other than it sounds like a Winston cup car, and handle awesome too.
4. Mike Leach custom PCM flash. Ran 14.23, with many 14.2's to back it up.
5. Hughes Engine Stage I 65mm TB & 180 tstat. No noticable gain.
RECENT MODS, have'nt tested any of these at the track, YET.
1. Calvert racing, Caltrac traction bars
2. Hughes Engines Stage I 68mm TB
3. F&B 69mm Billett TB
4. Bernd's IAT adjuster
With these additional mods, espesially the F&B TB, I'm hoping for a 14.1, and maybe a 14.0.
Other info: truck currently has approx 150 documented 1/4 runs (excel spreadsheet). I've been using Bosch +4 plugs for about a year now.
Always use 1 can of NOS octane boost (silver can)when racing. Most 1/4 runs were with spare tire, jack, and tailgate removed. Race weight is usually 3560 + driver= 3760 +/-.
Front tires @ 50 psi, slicks @ 16 psi
Breakage: Yep, if you launch this 5 spd at 3500 (with slicks), it will eventually grenade. Believe it or not, the rear end seems to be weaker than the trans. I totally destroyed the rear end on the 135th launch. The trans went out on me while strapped to a dyno, however I feel it was the speedshops fault, won't go into details, but warranty covered it thank god.
Overall, its a fun truck on the street and strip. The 5 spd makes the truck. The 4.7L is great, but bolt that 5spd to any V-8 Dodge offers, and I'm having fun!! For under $16K, its tough to beat, bang for the buck. And for $750 +/- for parts/tires, it'll run low 14's.

Message: Here in Central VA, I've never seen a 5spd V-8 Dakota on the lot. I did call down to Norfolk (Tysinger Dodge) one day, and they had 3 RC 5spd 4.7L on the lot, I was shocked! I had to wait 3 months for my truck to come in after I odered it.

Message: I had to order my 5-speed truck also. I asked the dealer why they didn't ever have any 5-speed V8s and the answer was because nobody wanted them. Yeah, Right. I think the truth is that most of the time the person ordering vehicles for the dealership is an idiot. The same dealer also said that if people wanted a fast truck they would get the R/T. I told the guy that an R/T with a 5-speed would be the hot ticket. To that the guy answered that nobody wants a manual transmission. Like I said......IDIOTS!

4.7 5 speed 3.92 LS
There are far fewer of these around than R/T's by a long shot. As far as I know I am the only one in British Columbia and I have seen a couple dozen R/T's. It's funny the look I get when I respond to why didn't I get an R/T. I say they are to slow for me. LOL

Message: amen guys, RC 4.7 5speeds are real speedsters. I love mine soo far. The look on the other guys face is soo priceless after he underestimates what I got and after I spank him. The only gripe with mine soo far is the redesigned dash, drivers and passengers, its way to boxed looking. My buddy has a 00 RC r/t and it seems like there is more legroom when i sit in his passenger seat. I still love my truck though! BTW, when are the F&B TBS goin to be released!?!?!

Message: I got the RT sales pitch when I went in to order my truck back in July '99, I just laughed, they had a new RT RC, that had no options, similiar to my truck, wanted 18,000 for it, I got my truck for 15,800, hee hee. RT's are pretty popular around here, see them everyday.
The F&B TB's are coming guys, I know we've been saying a few more weeks every week, but Bruce's making sure everything is good before the release, it'll be worth the wait !!
I'll be testing a Prototype 71 & 72mm TB from F&B sometime soon, these TB's will be for folks who have a custom PCM, exhaust, and other mods.

Message: I was looking for a a"Basic Truck" that could tow a boat. I went to the dealership and they had an '01 Patriot blue SLT RC 4.7 5-speed w/3:92 gearing. I did some home work. Figured I could do without power windows and CD if he cut me a good Price at 15,900 I was pretty happy. I bought it in December so I really couldn't appreciate the performance until this spring. Wow! Haven't had this much fun since my GTO in high school. Until reading the postings on this board I didn't know what a nice package it was. I planning to keep it stock just a tonneau for better milage. But talk about a "sleeper"!

Message: I checked out LeftLane.com and they could not guarantee me a 5-speed V8 'cause they said that there were NONE in the US in the past 3 months for sale.
I found a 98 Sport 5.2auto LOADED for $11900. Searched the internet, then snapped it up a week later. I put my 10600mile 94 Sport swb LOADED on his lot and he complained about the fact that it was a standard, "won't sell". BS It was gone in a week by a guy who was looking at a s10. He made the better choice.

Message: Matt, how did you get the dealer down so cheap o your 4.7? I am looking at $22K to start and not expecting anything under $19K after deals. Incentives don't come out for a while. I got the Dakota itch though, is 3 months wait for special order a regular amount? I was told 6 weeks. Thanks.

options were RC Sport Plus , 2wd, 4.7L 5spd, 3.92 POSI, Sliding rear window, Cruise Control, tilt column, floor mats. that's it.
I offered 15,000, the dealer counter offered 15,800, and I accepted! Total price out the door was about 16,100 +/-. Bang for the Buck, indeed!

Message: I'd say 3 months would be the extreme, It should be 6 weeks or less. I ordered mine in July '99 when they were switching to the 4.7L, and at the same time they were having problems getting 5spd trannys for production. This is why it took me 12 weeks to get mine.
Normally the wait time should be 4-6 weeks.

Message: Dr. Q, I've been around :) , I've been laying low from all of these 4.7L Vs. World !! Trying not to get involved in them anymore, however I do enjoy sharing any info I can!! Funny that you ask about the TB's, Here's the scoop:
The F&B 72mm , and 70mm TB will be here tomorrow morning, fed ex !! yipppeeeee!! Just in time for the Chrysler National event here in Virginia this weekend!! I'll be making some 1/4 passes this weekend with the 72mm TB, and there is supposed to be a Mobile Dyno Jet there this weekend, so I'll pull that also.
Furthermore, If the dyno jet is there, I'll be placing the Stock 65mm TB back on for a few pulls, and then put the 72mm TB on a see what kind of gains we can get!! Should be interesting!!
I'll post the results, stay tuned!

Message: Jason, unless you ran it last friday night and got the same times.... you have been running it with a density altitude of about 4000'. It's a function of the high night time temperatures, barometric pressure and humidity. Trust me.... as the temps fall - so will your times. There are also some "techniques" you can use to help those times also.
What are you doing this coming weekend? Any chance of you coming out to the Truckin' Nationals? They're going to be at Firebird Raceway. Pretty much all day Saturday and Sunday. I'll be there with my 4.7 with about 25 R/Ts and Ram SSTs. IF you get a chance it will be a good time!

Message: I bolted the 72mm Throttle Body on last night from F&B!! WOoooooooooooooooo Hooo
OH MY BLANK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My factory tach is now useless, cause its still pulling past the limits of the tach!! Bawaa haa
Well, ok, maybe not 6 grand, but it will pull hard up to 5500, no problem !! Huge seat of the pants difference, a little loss on the low end, but with a 5spd you can make up for that with a higher rpm launch!! Rolling start is similiar to a John Force holeshot !!!
Can't wait to hit the track tomorrow, and maybe the dyno too......
Start saving your coins folks, F&B Throttle bodys are a MUST have.
