Subject: P0420 Malfunction code?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a Dakota Sport 3.9L 2wd Auto, just about last night check engine came on, took it to the parts store and had them scan the PCM and I got it for free (that was nice) the scaner came out with the code P0240. I checked it on the book and sais (catalyst system efficiency below threshold) so I took it the the shop and ask for converter catalyst and the mechanic toold me that the converter was in exelent conditions, one of the O2 sensors is not working properly and that it could be the reason that its trowing that code, so i got replaced the O2 sensors and the cool temperature sensor as well. So I drove about 10 mins speed freeway and the check engine came back on. So does that mean that do I need to replace the converter? I just spend money on the sensors and Its cain of frustating to have the idea that I may have to replace the converter too. I dont know, if I should be paying atention what the PCM its was telling at the beginig. 3 years ago replace the converter put a universal and no problem, I just recently change the antifreeze, idle air control Motor, oil change, put inyector cleaner and put 92 octane gas 98% and 100% octane 2% (racing gas). I hope this didn't ruine the converter. Any Ideas or coments I would really appreciate it.

Thank You Guys!...

Since higher octane fuel is harder to ignite, one possibility would be that too much unburnt fuel could harm the cat. Premium and racing fuel won't give you any more performance unless you have the compression and spark advance to support it.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Thanks kowalski 4 the comments, I think, I shouldn't put 100 octane gasoline, I never imagine that could damage something. After the check engine light came on last night. I took my truck to get the PCM scaned this morning one more time just to know why the light came back on again.

Now the trouble code is P0132
Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

The scaner shows on the screen 02 sensor and this words << HTR >> were blinking. I really do not know what HTR means.

The upstream oxigen sensor was from bosch and the downstream sensor was from mopar same as the Temperature sensor that I got replaced.

Does anybody know if (bank 1, sensor 1) its the upstream or downstream sensor?

bank 1 is driver side, sensor 1 is upstream.

HTR may refer to the heater circuit. O2 sensors have a built-in heater to get the sensor to operating temperature real fast. On OBDII emissions vehicles (1996 and after, the heater circuit is monitored.

Hey!.. thanks chuck for your comments, I didn't know witch sensor was, so its the upstream sensor that it may be the one that is giving thar error code. I'm gonna check the fuses for the upstream and downstream just to make sure they are not blown. I need to get a original upstream sensor from mopar. I didn't get it 'cause they were out of stock.

To replace this sensor I paid for the labor, now I wanna do it myself. I looked up were the upstream sensor is and seems that I won't be able to get it out with the special socket to get o2 sensors out, it is to narrow, there is no space to get the ratchet or bar.

Is there a different tool that I could use to get the upstream sensor out?

Any answer I will apreciate.
Thank you!...
