I have a 97 Dakota, bought it 2 months ago. Today the check engine light came on so I went to AutoZone to have the PCM read. Misfire on cylinders 1,2,3,6.8. I changed the thermostat yesterday so I'll investigate the possibility of antifreeze getting onto the plugs, BUT, my bro-in-law mentioned that I should check the MAP sensor - any thoughts on this?

What could be wrong?

david in NH try replaving your cap and rotor when an engine misfires that's the first thing you check(cap and rotor sets are really cheap and easy to replace)

Jay your 2000 hyundai accent sounds like the timing is off belt probably skipped a tooth. replace your timing belt.

I had the same problem at the 2,3,4. I took to the dealer and they said it was just incorrect gap on spark plugs. And plug wires were pushed down to far on plugs, but they what they said so who knows

I have a 2000 chevy malibu the check light came on and there is white smoke coming from the exhaust as well as the antifreeze keep going really fast. I did a diagnostic check and found that cylinder 3 is misfiring. Could that be causing the cloud of white smoke as well as causing the antifreeze to go in a matter of hours? Thanks!

Hi. It seems obvious that your head gasket has left the premises and coolant is leaking into the cylinder. Replace as soon as possible.

head gasket maybe. intake gasket? the 3.4 gm has a problem with that. i'm not sure if your 3.1 has it too. first try some additive from walmart. get their big bottle, not the barsleak. it's $6 and claims to stop leaks on your cooling system. believe it or not, it stopped our 01 grand am gt from using coolant until we sold it. just my $6.02

Do a whole lot of proper diagnostic work, step by step, so you don't miss something. You'd feel dumber than dumb, replacing something expensive to discover a crudified spark plug boot was the problem.
My last missing turned out to be a worn-out camshaft. The time prior was valves.

Try swaqpping injector from another cylinder that's not mis-firing and see if the problem follows. If so, you've got a bad injector.

Inject sarcasm here:

There is another way to get rid of that code. Buy a Dodge!

To fix the notorious random multiple cylinder misfire code on mid 90s dodge trucks like the Dakota and the ram. After much research and headaches. It basically comes down to two things, secondary ignition crossfire which there is a TSB you can follow and it is, TSB18-48-98. It has to be followed exactly or it wont help. The second thing has to do with the engine not having enough dedicated grounds. The first aftermarket ground you should add is on the left fuel rail going to the windshield wiper motor mounting bolt, the right rail already has a ground strap to the firewall. 2nd is off the ignition coil bottom mounting bolt to the web(side) of the frame.Make sure and use 12 gauge wire. This should fix most of yalls random misfire if you've ruled everything else out. NO CAR BEFORE MOPAR.

Ok, I've read the post here. I'm not
completly mechanical declined. I have a
2000 Hyundai accent gl, it keeps
throwing misfire codes on all 4 cylinders.
And the random misfire code. I've had
the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter,
plugs wires changed. The exhaust
manifold was cracked, an cat was burnt
out. It runs and drives fine. But idles
rough an rpm drops to 500 at idle. What
could cause this. I've tryed everything I
can think of just for it to fail inspection
over an over. HELP........
