Message: Cherrypicker is a bit of overkill.
Better to use an engine hoist for the job. Much easier.

Message: If he only has access to a cherry picker it will do the job just fine.
Now for your question, I'm not big on lifting motors by intakes when they are aluminum.
Personally I would pull the intake and bolt to the heads.

Message: I did not trust the manifold either and pulled it before removing the engine. I attached to the heads. I also removed the fan, if you can remove the lower crank pulley then that gives even more room while the radiator is still installed. Your choice on the lifting equipment. The engine mount brackets that attach to the tranny gave me the most hassle getting to the TC bolts.

Message: A while back, one of the TV shows did a test on the carb pad lifts. The bolted the lift to the carb pad using quality carb studs, and bolted the intake to the base of the puller. The hook pulled through the steel of the hoop before it pulled a stud loose. Surprisingly strong.
However, the best way to pull an engine is with a leveler attached to the front and rear of both heads. Makes the job extremly easy to accomplish. I've not tried it on a Dakota. But on my car, it is easier to do with the intake removed.
