Subject: Lower gears? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 ClubCab with the 318 magnum. I just finished installing the performance PCM and M1 intake. I took off the manual fan a few years ago and installed and electric fan. It runs pretty darn good now. I still have the shift kit to put in.
I was thinking before I might want to jerk the 3.50 gears in favor of 3.90's or 4.11's. Not sure sure now that it's necessary to spend the grand on that. What do you guys think?

Message: Before you start changing gears, it would depend on how you want to use your truck. If you are going to use it for a daily driver, mostly highway, or city driving? Do you have an auto trans, or manual? An auto has a higher overdrive gear, and as such wouldn't hurt your fuel mileage very much.If you do mostly city driving you could actually gain a slight MPG inprovement.
If you go to the trouble to change the gears, I would go with the 4:11's. I wouldn't go much lower (higher numerically) because you could really start to lose some fuel economy. If you are just going to race it then I would go with something in the 4:50-4:88 range.
I hope this helps some, its hard to make a suggestion without more info, but this is the best I can do with what you asked.
Good Luck

Message: I work in town and live 7 miles from work. It will be very rare if I ever get this truck off the I-5 corridor in Everett, WA. That means not very fast! We have 2 more vehicles, one a dump and lumer yard truck and the other an SUV that we would take on trips.
No, this truck is a daily driver, but it's my toy now and I earn a decent nickle. Also, it is the 4 speed auto overdrive.

Message: Put in the 3.92 gears if you want improved acceleration and it trips your trigger.
