Message: If Dodge did stick a hemi engine in a Dakota, they'd sell a metric butt ton of them. That's not their philosophy. Their philosophy is to sell us what they want, not what we want.
And Hoss is right. 2004 was the last year of the good looking Dakotas. The newer Dakotas are some kinda ugly. Maybe the Mitsubishi version will have some sheet metal that's easier on the eye.
The 4.7L for 2008 is sweet, except for the Electronic Throttle Control - I'd rather have my gas pedal directly connected to the throttle.
It's not Dodge's fault though. As with Tire Pressure Monitoring System (thanks go to Ford Explorer and Firestone/Bridgestone tires for this one), which became standard (required) for model year 2008, Stability Control System is mandated by our government and will become standard (required) on all new vehicles in a couple years. You can't control vehicle stability without controlling the throttle, so now the throttle comes under computer control.
I think my next new 4x4 pickup will be a 1996 (first year for OBDII) or 1997 (last year for Halogen headlights) Toyota with manual locking front hubs.

I read in the new motor trend dodge is considering dropping quiet a few vehicles from their line up.The jeep commander, nitro, and the dakota. just to name a couple.
They need to restyle the dakota. there not selling.

There is someone on the www.dakotausa.com board, who has put a 5.7Hemi in his Gen 3 CC Dak. I think his Screenname is YellowDak, or something like that.

Message: in my own opinion putting a hemi, though it may increase sells because the name of the engine, would be a huge mistake course i have little knowlege of the 4.7 liter magnum but i I have the 5.2 in mine and i know the stroke of the hemi is way too short and may have a good amount of HP but would suffer in tourq
i know this because my old machine shop teacher has a ram with the 318 and his son has a ram as well with the larger hemi 5.7 is it not. i dont keep up with the new engines. but keeping in mind every thing is the same but the engine both half ton and same auto tranny and gears.
but any way both were pulling trailors with hay and in kentucky we have some nice knobs when they started going up that hill the 318 left the hemi way behind

Message: 318 hp: 235
5.7 Hemi hp: 345
Only logical explanation is that his son didnt want to burn 3 gallons of fuel to race up one hill fully loaded. I dont blame him on $3.50 gas.
The hemi will never be available in the dak. It would cut into sales of the Ram, which is Chryslers profit center. And why would anyone want a Hemi in a dak? The 4.7 HO (read 2005-2007 R/T trims) makes 265 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The new 4.7 makes 305ish hp (depending on the vehicle) and 330 lb-ft of torque. This is encroaching on Hemi territory as it is. But don't get me wrong, I think it would be sweet even if it isnt logical. After reading the posts of people doing the swap I want to do it myself.
You are correct though, much of the Hemi's success comes from its name. Nonetheless, it is a sweet motor. The 318 is an archaic, heavy motor and in stock form, ballless compared to the Hemi.

Message: The 2005-up Dakota frame rails are too narrow for the 5.7 HEMI.
The 4.7 is actually "3/4ths" Hemi, due to the shape of the combustion chamber; even a centered spark plug to boot. The 5.7 HEMI could have been as "good" as the 4.7 SOHC, but Dr.Z and his bean counters chose to make it a dumbass old school pushrod instead.

Message: Talk to any Dodge tech in the know, they will tell you that they like the 4.7 better than the new Hemi's. I know at our local track there is a 4.7 standard cab Dak kicking the snot out of every Hemi Ram that has put it on the line. High revving little buggers!! Mine has turned a best through 200 feet of slop, of 4.92!!! Runs a consistent 5.0. I haven't had anyone put their Hemi up against me yet so, I can't give you a comparison. "Long live the 4.7" is what I say!! I just wish the 2000 model had more power and torqur from the factory. Oh, well...... just have to mod it little by little until it's right!!

Message: I have a 01' dakota with the 4.7. I bought it with 203,000. I now have 258,000 two years later. I have a friend with a hemi ram and until about 70mph ive got him beat. has anyone out there supercharged their 4.7? I really dont think it needs a hemi, being lighter than the ram evens them out speed wise already, and if you did and performance stuff to the 4.7, your biggest problem would be traction.

Message: If you want a fast Dakota just build you a stroked small block, for a lot less than a Hemi. Iam running a stroked small block and when i raise the hood the average person doesnt know its not a 318 except for the headers and intake it looks stock. And a lot cheaper than a Hemi. And faster than a STOCK one.I know a Hemi can be built to be quicker but then you lose you elemennt of surprise.Forget the Hemi and build you a small block.
