Message: I'd highly recommend using the V8 tb cable when you make the switch to the v8 TB. You may have already seen it but take a look at the post I started on the V6 page called "Stiff Spring on V8 TB". I finally got the swap to work for me today but I had a lot of problems trying to make my existing V6 TB cable work with a V8 TB.

Message: thanks jimmy, ya i already read your post, and im going to try and go to a salvage yard tomorrow and go look for one since i ordered a tb from a guy on here already
but the thing that still puzzles me, is what vehicle and years will work? the guy at the junk yards gonna ask me, and it would be nice to kno what vehicles and years would fit, so if he doesnt have 1 vehicle, i can tell him another, better my chances of getting 1
since i doubt a v8 cable from just any vehicle will work

Message: Any TB from 98 and up will work in the 2001. It has to be from a non-EGR engine. I had trouble with mine until I got the V8 throttle cable. The Durango, Dakota, van and Ram all use the same V8 tb. It's best if you can get the cable from a Durango or Dakota so it will be the correct length. The junk yard will be able to dross-reference his inventory and find the TB and cable for you.

Message: jimmy, when you had problems, and you reset your pcm, did it drive normal right after you reset it and then you taught it how you drive, or did it drive normal after about 50miles? i ask because i dont drive that far in short periods of time, so it would take me close to a month to drive 50miles, however i am going upnorth in about a month, so if i have to reteach it before it drives fine again, id rather wait to install the tb, then put it on for the drive, do it all at once
otherwise ill have to put up with a truck that runs like crap for a month, unless when i reset the pcm, it will drive fine instantly
2nd question, do i need a gasket for the v6, or v8? i dont believe any1 has mentioned that

Message: Yes you need a new tb gasket. The old one will be stuck to the bottom of the old tb when you pull it off. Gasket is only about $1.50 at Advance, I got this one at Autozone for $1.00.
I never reset the pcm. I did start the truck without touching the gas pedal and let it run about a minute then shut it off and started it back up again to let the pcm learn the tps setting for the new tb, but that was all I had to do. I just drove and it seemed to learn the new tb almost instantly. That might have something to do with my truck being a manual 5speed and it not having to learn the tb to the transmission, so maybe it's not so complicated as with an automatic. I don't know. Others have had a break-in period on theirs and said the performance only got better the more miles they put on.
The problems I had with the first one were from my incorrect placement of the Holley ball stud, the tb cable being too short and I think the tb was just bad to begin with. The spring on it was so stiff I couldn't drive the truck right. My new one works great. If you do the tb make sure you get the v8 cable and save yourself a lot of trouble. And before you start the truck to reset the tps, have the ignition off and make sure the new cable opens the butterflies completely and they don't bind up when you press the pedal. Also transfer the sensors off your old tb to the new one, because you already know they work.

Message: problem is i have an automatic tranny, so i will have those problems i assume, does any1 know if with my automatic, ill need to reset the pcm and wait til i drive 50miles, or will it automatically drive normal after i reset the pcm? i really cant put up with it driving crappy for a month, so like i said, if it will drive crappy until i drive 50miles, ill wait til i have to drive upnorth
and i know i need a new gasket, but do i get a v8 gasket, or a v6 gasket? i assume the gaskets will be slightly different sizes

Message: Just ask for the gasket for the V6. Gasket is the same for both V6 and V8. Your truck should not drive crappy when you put the tb on. It should improve over a relatively short time as the pcm and transmission adjust to the new tb. From what I have read here the time it takes varies, some say 50 miles, some say 200 miles. Some here also say they never reset their pcm either with automatic or manual tranny. You could put it on and probably just drive and it should be fine either way. Mine adjusted instantly. I drove my truck on about a 40 mile round trip last night after I installed the tb & cable, but less than a mile into the trip I could tell the difference in performance. The truck pulls harder from about 1200 on up to 2000 RPM and is faster when taking off from a stop. When I got to the interstate I had absolutely no trouble getting up to 75 or 80 mph, and it took less time to get there. These were the gains I was looking for when I did the tb swap. Many people here have said it gets even better when you upgrade to a better flowing exhaust. That's my next step, probably a Dynomax when I get time to do it.
Make sure you adjust the tv cable correctly. I don't know much about that but there are posts here on adjusting it so the tranny will shift correctly in relation to the throttle position.

Message: thanks, thats exactally what i wanted to hear! im extremely anxious for those power gains, i will drive a few miles and if its fine, i wont reset the pcm, if i notice a bad difference, ill reset it at a gas station or something, thanks for all the help jimmy
im doing some exhaust work soon, cheaply tho, just until i get more money, then ill do a real exhaust system and headers

Message: Good, I hope you get the same results with your truck. Just about everybody here who did the tb swap had real good results from it so I knew the trouble I had was from some error on my part, but I still think the first one was defective somehow. And cheap exhaust may not be so bad, I think it was Daddio and Dakota49 who told me they used "cheap" Cherry Bomb and some other brand of muffler and it worked great. Let us know how the tb works for you.

Message: I think most people on here got their cables from the dealer, anywhere from $25 to $40.00. Maybe your junk yard could locate one for you at another yard thru the locator service, but that might cost as much or more than the dealer. Plus at the dealer you know you are getting the right part. That is not to say you can't modify your existing cable and/or the linkage on the new tb. Many here have done that and it worked out fine. But for fool-proof operation, I would say use the V8 cable from the junk yard or the dealership. And I should know because I'm the fool who had so much trouble with it in the first place. If the dealer quotes a high price, shop around or just ask for the wholesale discount. The worst they could do is say no. Good luck with it.

Message: Here's a good Website to look up parts and prices:
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214370
The V8 5.9 cable is $23.10 on there. Only $3.10 more than I paid for a used one. I guess they add shipping too, but I don't buy parts online. I do use it as a reference to see if I am getting a good deal when I need a part though. It depends on the dealer I guess. There's one right up the street from my job and they have a real good staff there, but their prices are always list price or right at it. Then there's another real good dealer about 25 miles south of where I live, they have a real good staff too. But their prices are almost always right around the same as what is on the Mopar Part USA site. So it never hurts to shop around. There's other parts sites too, like www.rockauto.com and www.car-part.com.
Where are you located? There has to be more than just 2 junk yards near you. The best is one where you go out and pull the part yourself. That way you know for sure you get the right part. Plus it's cool just to hike around the yard. You never know what you will find that you might have use for. Your dealer charged about 35% too much for that resistor pack. Most guys have found them for about $10 to $15.00 at other dealers.
I saw your post about the AIT sensor too, and was thinking if you could get to a junk yard or get one from the dealer or maybe a parts house, you could just leave the original one in its original location and put the one connected to the PCM where ever you need to relocate it. That way you know you got a good seal on it. Or even cheaper take the plug you put in it and wrap it with Teflon tape or some liquid/paste thread sealer.
