Message: Funny thing happened to me on the way to work. I'm sitting at the stop light, minding my own business and waiting for it to change. All of a sudden the vehical next to me starts to rev it's engine. Looking over I spy some 16 year old kid in a severely riced-out Kia Sportage. We're talking the abbrasive paint scheme, tiny side-wall tires with big chrome rims, stickers everywhere. Oh, let's not forget the DUAL 16" exhaust tips! Well, they LOOKED 16"... (I only saw them on an angle, when he tried to jump the light prematurely) There must have been five that I could see proclaiming it as a V6. Kia makes V6s? Shows how much I know. Didn't SOUND like a comparable V6 to my Dakota almost stock (Airaid intake) 3.9 though. What really got me was the giant, "NOS" emblazzened on the back windows.
NOS? Heck, wouldn't that thing flip over backwards with NOS?
Alright, fine. He's flipping me these "Come on, I can take ya" looks. Cocky little guy. Let's see if he's REALLY got NOS in that thing.
Light turns green and I let the clutch out into first slowly, trying to minimize wheel hop. The "V6" Sportage makes this wierd squealing noise, which after a moment, I relize is the engine revving, not the tires! Hit second gear and am already a truck length ahead. I got to the next light, about a 1/4 mile away, by the time he was halfway there.
Needless to say, I was laughing my butt off. It was rather embarressing, I suppose, for him. But hey, he's the one wanting to race, I was content to putter on to work. I have no pitty for people who ask for it!

I'm surprised that they didn't eventually catch you later, and then to a flyby at 90MPH or so. V6 Kia, i doubt it. V6 emblems, sure.

Message: The Kia Sportage pumps out a whooping 130hp and 127lbs from a 2.0L lawn tractor motor. One thing that's not a joke is a 10year or 100,000 mile warranty. Which Dodge is only half of that.

Message: I think they need that 10yr/100,000 mile warranty. A 2001 Kia Sephia came into my work the other day (Valvoline Express Care). It had a whopping 5800 miles on it with oil leaking from every possible seal and gasket on it.

Wesley,
I agree. Everyone I've known with a Kia has done nothing but whine about how crappy they are put together. The interiors fall apart, body rattles, engines leak...

Message: Dodge's warranty is 7 year 100,000 miles. I would say that is more than half! The way people drive these days you will hit 100,000 in 7 years soo the extra 3 years Kia has just makes it seem better. If you only put 15k on your truck a year which I would say is conservative, you would have 105,000 miles in 7 years. By the way, does anybody know anyone who has a kia thats 10 years old?

Message: I'm not going to try and pretend that anyone will agree with me that there are two performance schools, Rice and American, and that I have total respect for both of them. I drive a 2003 Kia Spectra GSX, and plan some modifications for it. It comes stock with more horses than the base model Civic, so I know there are some things I could do. It's going to take major work, but that's what I'll enjoy -- fixing up something that no one else has. As for the whole, "piece of crap, low mileage repairs argument, it just doesn't carry any weigth. I have right at 20,000 miles on my car and it runs just as well as the day I bought it. Everything's tight, nothing leaks...

Message: That's a hilarious story, Todd. One of my best friends has a '98 Kia Sephia, and it is quite possibly the most poorly constructed car I've ever been in. He got it used with about 30,000 miles on it (in 1999 or 2000), and now it has about 80,000 miles; the thing is literally falling apart. I mean the a/c vents have split from the dash, the windshield wiper control lever FELL OUT, the vents/defrosters on the top of the dash have warped and come out of the dash, etc. "Performance" wise, it runs under its own power, but not by much.
A little anecdote: I helped him move some miscellaneous furniture, and I had backed into a parking space a few spaces down from his Kia. He pulled out, and when he got in front of me, he floored it, at which time the car hesitated for a split second and then moved (he was being funny, as he knew his car can't do squat). I laughed, and then punched my truck's pedal, which produced wheelspin, some screeching, and a nice short set of black marks in the parking space.
Kia probably gives a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty because the parts they use are so cheap, they could replace every part on the car and still make a profit from the selling price of the new car.

Message: My wife bought a Kia Sportage which almost put me into cardiac arrest since I am a truck and Corvette person. It's 2 years old and I can honestly say that it is holding up better than my Dakota and the frame under the Kia is every bit as hefty as the Dakota and it came rust proofed from the factory and still looks like new. It is not very powerful nor does it handle like a sports car (in fact it rides more like a sherman tank), but it runs good and was 1/2 the cost of my Dakota.

Message: gotta give those little 4 cyl engines credit. as you know our 4.7 is rated at 235 hp and 295 tq. but my little 1.8 toyota is rated at both 130 hp and 130 tq. not bad from such a small engine. not sure what the kia has but those little 2.0 and smaller engines do have some power. plus good gas milage. i know longer own my truck traded it in for a corolla. but also traded in my wifes van for a 01 durango to replace my truck. also my wife raced me one day. and whipped my butt. but hey i get 35 mpg and 300 miles out of a $10 dollar tank of gas. my wife gets 17 mpg and 300 nmiles out of a $30 dollar tank of gas
You can never have to much fun in a 4x4

Message: Well here's my Kia story, I got a Kia late one night as a rental at the airport. I was in fear for my life. 18 wheelers almost blew me off the highway. It got great gas milage but it was like riding in a pop can.
To each his own!
I love both my Daks.

Message: Hey! Watch it doggong the old bugs. I used to drag race with a guy who ran a 68 VW. We ran 1/8 miles and he would regularly run low 7's. I was running a maverick with a 351 at the time. Purely race (trailered to the track) and the VW and I would take turns posting faster times than each other. Don't think a 4 banger can't hang. I learned that lesson a long time ago.
