Subject: Rear axle help IP: Logged
Message: OK i have a 1995 dodge dakota with a 318 automatic 2wd. I know they put limited slip rear ends in these trucks but i need to know which rear ends had them. Did the 8 3/4 or the 9 1/4 have them? Also what would the numbers under the hood say or can you tell by them? I am going this saturday morning to try and find one. Any help would be great. And one last question, my truck has a 8 3/4 in the rear would the axle splin be diff than a 9 1/4?

Message: Both the 8.25 and 9.25 diffs came with and without LS. Look under the hood or inside the glove box for a sticker listing the build options.
None of the parts interchange between the two rear ends.

Message: Iceman, the 8 3/4 has not been in production sonce the 70's. You either have the 8 1/4 or 9 1/4 rear.

Message: Yup, 8 3/4 was available with sure grip, but never offered in a Dakota.

Message: I ordered my 2001 Quad cab 4.7, etc., from the factory.
I just looked in the parking lot. Under the hood, nothing about the tranny, rear end, etc.
***In the glove box, it states the Rear is 'Anti-Spin Differential' (I can sure get mine to spin!)
When I was researching the NV3500 tranny I have, I have seen it came with two sets of gearing, a 'LO' set and a 'HI' set.
I now know that mine (probably all) of the manuals behind the 4.7 in a Dakota has the 'high' set. (Man, 1st is pretty short already, but not a 'granny' gear)

Message: You can put a 83/4 in it real easy. then its almost bulletproof.when you go to the salvage look under all the old dodge trucks.plus some of the old 60s cars.Just in case you dont know how to tell the differance, the 83/4 doesnt have a inspection plate on the rear.

Message: To determine if it's a Limited Slip you have to crawl under the back of the truck. One of the bolt attaching the rear cover to the cover will also have a slamm metal tab on it with the information you need.

Message: looking for a 8 3/4 rear, the old Dodge Vans also had the 8 3/4 in them as well.

Message: A salvaged 8 3/4 will likely require modification to work. The rear in the vans is one of the widest, but that difference won't matter much, I guess, if you're already planning to shorten the axle tubes and order custom axles.

Message: I thought the 8 3/4 were a round diff., while the 9.25 in hexagon shaped, right?

Message: Todd - maybe you are thinking of the 8 1/4 ? The 8 3/4 is exactly as "jacksdodges" posted. It's known for it's strong design, and the ability to easily do a gear change swap by just swapping out the pig and readjusting the axle sideplay - once the pig is properly set up. The guts pull out the front intact once you pull the axles back.
