Subject: 1.7's or a cam? IP: Logged
Message: im almos ready to order my 1.7 rocker arms, but now im thinking if i should go for a cam insted.
right now i have a intake, TB, 180 t stat, 3923's, and gibson cat back.
i want a cam that is not too radical, but will definatly give me more power, and will pass smog in california. how much power will i get over the crower arms, and how hard is it to install?

Message: Eric,
Seems like you have more money than you know what to do with or you don't have a clue to what you want to do with your truck. Start with the basics, get all your bolt ons except a supercharger. Then go internal, like a cam, heads, etc. Get stuff that will work together. And get a custom cam made for your truck, thats the only way your going to get the most power from it. I see where you wanted a supercharger and now you want to rockers or cam. It just seems like you want to do something to your truck but don't know want. Bolt ons, then decide if what you want the truck to do.

Message: i did want a SC from powerdyne (its the only one i can afford) but its not carb legal in ca. so now i am doing the 1.7's and just throwing around the idea of a cam insted. I have the bolt-ons already. except for the headers, which for less money i can have the rockers and i can get more power out of them.

Message:
On the 1.7RR's and a cam, be careful with the stick valve springs and make sure you have the heads machined properly for both. Valvebind can happen with 1.7:1 rockers and a higher lift cam.
Preferred: 1.6:1 Rollers and a good cam (112-114 lobe seperation to keep it MAP friendly).

Message: Well, heres my 2 cents,I have a 2000 Dakota R/T and I have the Crower 1.7 rockers, they are worth about 10 to 14 h.p. at the motor, you do not want a cam yet, because you will have to get your pcm customized for the cam,if you dont you wont gain any h.p. and you definetly wont pass smog, you must remember that these motors are "speed density" and they are controlled by vacuum , if you throw a big cam in the vacuum will drop to low and it will run like crap, the rocker arms are more subtle and dont effect emissions or drivabilty, you wont feel the difference until about 3000 rpm.The only other advice I can give you is be sure to buy crowers pushrods and guideplates, those self aligning rockers are dangerous,I have seen a few R/T's tose a rocker when they used the self aligning rockers, bad news, the pushrods and guideplates are good insurance and I agree with Sleeper 318,find a good parts combo, use mods that work and figure out what you want to do with your truck, set a goal to complete, and pick your mods wisely.Good luck, get those pushrods and guideplates!!

Message: BH-R/T, thanks for the info. if the rockers only are worth 15HP at the motor is the mod really worth it? that is the same hp that the cold air kit provides. im not going to go over 5000 rpm with it so do i need the guid plates?
im also getting my comp flashed by mike leach in the next couple of weeks.

Message: I have had bad experinces with Crane Cams. I had two of their cams self destruct in an engine. I went with an oem cam in that engine while I wateing for a new cam to arrive and it had no problems at all. I will only use Crowler, Lunati, and Isky cams. The crane cams booth had air pockets in the lobes. Crane replaced the cams but that is of little value when your vechile is down or when tons of metal shaveings are floatin through your engine until the filter catchs them. I found out in a hurry why race teams insist on x-raying parts.
