Subject: help with blow-by please IP: Logged
Message: Im getting blow-by and oil is coming out of my breather, PCV, oil cap and there is oil in my hat. I recently replaced the intake manifold gasket and had a compression test done and all my cylenders are within tolerance. The PVC seems to be fine and I just changed the breather. That may fix it, Ill know tomarrow. What else can cause blow-by?

Message: Remove the PCV And shake it. No rattle no good. Also check for pinched or pluged vacuum hoses

Message: Too much blow by is caused by worn rings. Products of combustion end up in the crank case.
Remove the oil filler cap. run the engine at a high idle. Place your hand lightly over the fill port. How much pressure do you feel? Compare to an engine that isn't spooging oil.

Message: the truck has just over 105000 miles and the engine was rebuilt at 50000. I find it hard to believe that the rings are that worn. PCV is good. New breather is on. No hoses seem to be pinched or pluged. If the rings are worn, this means total rebuild, correct? How long will it last in the current state?

Message: One more thing, wouldnt a compression test reveal worn rings?

Message: No, a compression test would not always reveal what you need to know. Did you do the test both wet and dry?
Crank case pressure only comes from one place - the combustion chamber.

Message: jgreen- Who rebuilt your engine? Did anyone make sure the ring gaps were not lined up? I broke a Harley motor down once that smoked and raised all types of cane, Oil was coming out of the breather and exhaust...... When I tore the engine down, it immediately came to light that the ring gaps were not staggered. A light hone and staggering of the rings solved the problem.

Message: The engine is a 318 and was built by someone at Camp Lejune North Carolina. I have no way on knowing exactly what was done. If the rings were not staggered wouldnt that cause an imediate problem? Ive only had the truck for 6 months and it didnt do it until two months ago. After a compression test that was within tolerance, a replaced intake manifold gasket and breather and checking of the PCV valve I'm lost.

Message: a normal compression check would not always reveal worn rings. .boB got it right by suggesting the wet compression test. a cylinder leak-down test would also be a good source of information as steve suggested.
jgreen, what steps did you take to do your compression check?
