About what should the contacts look like on the distributor cap if everythings ok. I'm trying to figure out why my truck bucks a little around 1500 rpms and decided to check my distributor and make sure my wires were connected tightly. I had one that wasn't on like it should and now that post is discolored. The contacts on the inside had kind of like a white dust and a burn mark where the rotor hits them. That the way they should be? Thanks

The rotor does not hit the contacts unless there is a problem and I doubt that. It would hit one just one time and distroy the cap and/or rotor. If the contacts are not worn, you can clean them. For the effort and time involved and the cost of a cap, I would just buy a new cap. Get a good one with brass contacts and a new rotor to boot. The rotor contact wears faster then the cap allowing a greater distance between the contacts.

So many problems .... So little time

that white dust is corrosion. aluminum contacts will look like that after a while. OBIO3
is right the rotor does not touch the contact the cap. buy a quality cap & rotor like a borg Warner or NAPA with brass contacts.

Oh...thank you I didn't know they didn't make contact...other than I should've figured it out. I replaced the rotor and cap not too long ago with the one from Napa with the brass contacts probably about 5k mi ago...maybe more.I used a screw driver to scrape off the residue earlier but I still dont think that is my problem. I figure the one post is discolored because the plug wire wasn't in direct contact so it's darker because it's burned from the arcing. I've read that the Blaster coils eat up caps but not sure on the milage they normally give but I dont think it should be this soon. After I replace my timing chain and the problem persits I'll go get a new cap and rotor. Thanks.

ADAM. A lose wire won't cause arcing inside the cap. Take a real close look on the inside in the area of the burned contact. Your going to discover a crack, a carbin track or a gouge/scrach in there. This would cause spark to jump across to the burned contact allowing 2 or more cylenders to fire at once at least intermitantly. There is the most likely cause of your engine jumping as you say. Again, get a new one.

I didn't mean on the inside. This is on the outside where the plug wire connects to the cap is where the discolored post is. The inside contacts just had the white powder and the burn marks. I just figured that the outside post was discolored because a plug wire wasn't fastened correctly.

For people who dont ever look at their engine or know anything about it, it wouldn't be hard for someone with the 4.7 who is used to the distributor to not know what's going on.

I open the Cap (Toyota Engine 4A FHE- 1993) and find contacts white stained. I scratch of stain and alas! they are groved, eroded so to say. Any Effect to engine power out? At what degree should the grooving be tolerated as having little or no effect to power output?
