Dont know much about the 4 bangers but first thing i would do is get air intake. Give that motor a little bit more air to breath. Next probably exhaust, im not sure how much you would want to dump into it though. It doesnt have to much to begin with.

Y'know. I almost made a smartass comment about what you're trying to do. But after thinking on it for a minute or so, I realized that anyone trying to push a 2-ton vehicle with a 4 cylinder engine already has an 'uphill battle'.

All the usual hot rod tricks work: Heads, cam, compresion, exhaust, etc. Lighten the truck, lower the gear ratio.
If you really want to get halfway decent power and fuel mileage, you need to go forced induction. You need a turbo.

.boB has sound advice. just in case no one has noticed, inline 4's can make power. of course it takes a little more effort but that's the fun of it.

A person might say the same to those that want to increase the power of their v6 or v8. Obviously you are person that is satisfied with a stock engine. Your type is far and few between on this site.

Zach-headers & LO R muffs;K&N,chip(if avail)cam,
might get you a bit...turbo, or supercharger is only way to make decent pwr, but then this engn
wasnt built for that, & self destruct is probable
Depend on yr/model-would V8 drop in? That would prob give most bang for buck. Or sell/trade for
v8....its up to you, & what your abilities,& cap-
abilities are...remember, more pwr=less mileage.
