Subject: Engine Swap IP: Logged
Message: I know that this has probably been discussed here many a time, but I'm having a little trouble finding previous posts without the search feature. I have done many engine swaps with carburated engines, but never a nit-picky fuel injected one.
I have a 1998 4x4 dakota with the 3.9. I am dead set on putting a 5.2 in it because I know someone that will sell one to me. My question is... Will it bolt up to my transmission and what is the best way to find out. I know the engine mounts and such are the same and all I need to do is find a computer to work with it. I have heard that all you need to do is use the existing wiring harness and run 4 extra wires for the two new fuel injectors and then rig them up to the new computer... is it as easy as this?
Are there any other concerns that someone might want to bring to my attention? Also, are there any pointers or is there anybody that has done this swap before?
Thanks,
David

Message: Alright, I found out that I have the 42RE transmission. The guy at the dealer said that they do put these behind the 318's and that it would handle the torque. He also said that there is a heavier duty one, a 46RE that is stronger. Does anyone know how big of a difference there is or maybe some of the answers to my other questions?
Thanks,
David

Message: The 46RE will handle all the pedal stomping to throw out at it. With the 42RE, you can run it, but you have to limit the towing and heavy left-footed "fun" driving:) With the harness, you can use the original V6 one and just add in the 2 extra injectors, not too hard. I personnally have just swapped over the V8 harness(s), that way I didn't have to worry about messing with lead wire continuity. As for other things, try to use a 96 or newer (up to 03) 5.2 engine due to all the emmissions wiring in your 98 is set up for a non-egr motor. You don't have to worry about the fuel pump assembly as they are the same between the 3.9 and 5.2, but you will need either a new V8 throttle cable, or fabricate a new connection point for the V6 one. Also a V8 fan shroud, and an external tranny cooler (a definite if you are using the original 42RE tranny). Good Luck!!!
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

Message: Thanks so much. That's just what I needed to know. I can get a good deal on a non-egr 5.2 out of about a 1999 dakota. One more quesiton though. Does it matter to the comptuer whether I have a 42RE or a 46RE?
Thanks,
David
