Message: Normally, it requires a DRB III scantool, which only the dealerships have. But it actually depends on what you want reprogrammed. Without more detail, it's hard to help you.

Message: I believe Superchips may have something by now, but the NGC seems to have the custom folks beat. Maybe that was Dodge's goal?

Message: Are you saying they are working at new software to PREVENT reprogramming by the aftermarket???
Why would they bother doing that?
I remeber the ongoing battle with programming Direct TV cards to get free TV while DTV programmers came up with new stuff for the hackers to again overcome (not that I know anything about that), but why be so weird about modding a PCM? Most people don't do it until the warranty is over anyway.

Message: Just a suspicion, GraphiteDak. Not software to prevent it, but system design to make it difficult.
Here's a for example:
My 2004 instrument cluster gauges, not the speedo and tach, but the other ones, are basic gauges with no real info on them. No scale numbers, just a needle with minimum and maximum marks on an otherwise empty line. Earlier models had real numbers on those gauges. Can I replace my instrument cluster with an earlier model? NO. The instrument cluster electronics acts like a "Body Control Module". Much of that info in your overhead console comes from the cluster electronics. If the cluster is replaced it has to be programmed with VIN, etc. at a dealership (VIN? why?). 2004 and newer 4.7L have the New Generation Controller (NGC), which combined PCU and TCU into a single unit. When they did that, they also changed the communications protocol, and set up the PCU to drive three of those four peripheral gauges. This makes using an earlier model cluster impossible. Even the overlays are not compatible, because of some lamp location changes.
It shouldn't be this hard.
On a brighter note, I did just install the Transgo kit in my 545RFE.
Wow. Now THAT was worth $100.

Message: Kevin, Kind of off topic (sorry) but what did you like so much about the Transgo kit, what did it improve? Just wondering as I'm about to service the tranny,,, might as well pop in the Transgo kit if it's worth $100.

Message: It was a royal messy procedure, but I have firmer 1 to 2 shifts, firmer 2 to 3 shifts, and torque converter seems locks up a little better.
It took a couple weeks for the TCU to relearn, but after that, it's smooth sailing.

and read through the threads at the top of the page that mention shift kit.
