Subject: 4.7 or 5.2 IP: Logged
Message: I have an '00 4x4 with the ole mighty 3.9 and was wondering which engine would be a better trade. I like the 4.7 but I like the 5.2 because it's basically just like my 3.9 and I've already worked on it. I know I need new wiring and comp but will that be it? The engine mounts on the 4.7 should be the same right? That's when they started putting the 4.7 in was '00. I have the 5 spd and I think they trannys the same right? I'm not sure whether getting a new engine or building my v6 is the best way to go. Advice? I've been searching around but haven't gotten an answer I've been looking for.

Message: You'll need the PCM and wiring harness for a 4.7 manual from the same model year. A PCM for an auto won't work. There may be some other things, sensors, clutch, mounts, and so on that would need changing. If the tranny you have is the NV3500, it's the same one in my truck - no problem there.
If it's not cost prohibitive I'd say go for it. The 4.7 engine is fantastic. One bonus, you'll never need to worry about plug wires and cap/rotor ever again. The coil-on-plug ingition provides huge spark, so much to the point that there is no need for an aftermarket regarding ignition.

Message: LOL you said it. That's one reason I'm doing a 4.7 in my duster.
NO spark plug wires to burn from the exhaust, turbo, etc.
And the NV3500 I bought used came from a 3.9, so they are said to be the exact same.

Message: yea I figured PCM and wiring harness and then the y pipe and O2 sensors...what about engine mounts? I'm at my training command for the next year so I'll have to get everything and take it to a shop. I'd like to do it myself but being inexperienced and no time at all kinda sets me back. Being with out a vehicle wont be too bad because i live on base and only a couple hundred yards from the school...really no free time here. Just looking for what would be more cost effective. Once I get my bonus its gonna burn a hole in my pocket so i was thinking a V8 would be a nice thing to drop in. Thanks

Message: 4.7 engine mounts are different than the 3.9.
The 3.9 shares mounts with the 5.2 (and 5.9, for that matter), so that would be the easier (and cheaper) way to go. It all depends if you have the money and are willing to go the extra step for the 4.7.

Message: You will just have to decide what V8 engine to use.
Either way, you will be happy over the V6 that is for sure.
And if you do a 4.7 swap, that may be the first one I've heard of. People already do 5.2/5.9 and other V8 swaps all of the time. And of course the 5.2/5.9 would be easiest to match back up. Maybe even reusing the front accessory mounts, etc.
