I use RTV Black on both sides of gasket surfaces other than intake/exhaust manifold gaskets. On the Intake manifold ,exhaust manifold gaskets, I use a copper impregnating type spray made by permatex. I have never had a leak.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.

RTV black, just around the coolant ports on both sides of the gasket. The rest of the gasket, dry.
The two rubber end gaskets get some RTV also, especially where they meet the intake gaskets.
