Subject: Coverting a 91' LA 318 motor to carb.

I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota with a 318 LA motor. I wanna put a intake and carb on it. Someone told me I would have to hook up an electric fuel pump. If anyone has done this before and knows how to please let me know the in's and outs of it.

The '91's had fuel injection, so the provisions for a mechanical pump aren't there. There was a fuel pump eccentric on the cam to actuate the mech. pump. Now, this can be added, but unless you're rebuilding the engine, it's much easier to plumb in an electric pump. It's easy too. Put the pump in the rear near the tank. Remember to plug the fuel return line under hood right next to the main fuel line. If you get an electric pump for carbs, that's it for fuel. However, you also need to get the Mopar Performance ignition kit. It includes very good instructions (as well as distributor, ignition box, and ballast resistor) for what wires to splice (it's only a couple) so that your mod is a simple turn-key deal. The computer stays in place, and runs the electrical systems, as well as the AC, etc. Nothin' to it.

Oh, forgot something. If you wish to use the electric fuel pump already on your truck, just use something like the Mallory single inlet, dual outlet fuel pressure regulator (which is what I did). With the ignition mod, turn the key, and the stock electric pump does the deed. You'll need a fuel pressure gauge to set the regulator (it's adjustable). Set it for about 6 psi, run the main outlet to the carb, and tie the secondary outlet to the fuel return line.

I had to also run a external voltage regulator to get the alt. to charge on my 91 after changing to a carb. The mallory fuel regulator worked great on mine too while using the stock fuel pump.

I have a '94 360 set up for a carb that is going into a '92 dakota, does anybody know if this conversion will also work for my application? and if it does, is it the same procedure?

You're not gonna have the return line for the fuel on the '92 Dak, so you'll need to plumb one in, or run an in-line electric pump for carburetor use (lower psi). The Magnum system uses way too much pressure to run straight to a carb. Otherwise, the swap is the same.

hey, does anybody happen to have a part number for that regulator, or will any regulator with single inlet/dual outlet work (as long as the psi range of adjustment is correct, of course)?

I use the Mallory 4307M, but it looks like the even the 4207 would work. Pretty much any will work per your question.

Most 92's do have return line SMPI. Its one of the most desirable years for modified Daks.

The Magnum V6/V8 systems have been non-return line from the beginning, and that would be 1992 for 3.9/5.2, and 1993 for 360 regardless of what vehicle they were in.

I stand corrected. I'd always read that part of the Magnum fuel system was the returnless fuel line arrangement, but I was looking at my '93 service manual, and sure enough, they still had them. Maybe they went returnless in 94?
