Message: dano,
Looks like the resident child screwed up your post. Sorry.
AWD meaning full time four wheel drive? Why?
I think you need sophistocated running gear to make that work properly. Even if you do spend the money, is it worth it just to be able to say you did it?
Then there is the fact that your MPG will suffer.

Message: and you won't be able to do burn outs. If you want AWD, stick your Dakota body on a wrecked durango.

Message: dont worry bout it shatto. well i want to make a cool street truck i guess, and as far as the running gear, i think what i have would suffice. the front is an open diff as is the rear. all i need is a viscous coupling in the t case to make it work. i have other vehicles to drive so im not really worried about gas mileage. ive seen cyclones and typhoons launch and they just leave. i mean leave hard, very little wheel spin. i plan (hope) to turbo this truck and i would have to invest in some expensive sticky tires to hook up leaving under boost, but not if it were AWD. it would leave like the GMCs, at least i hope so.
is there anything im missing about the drivetrain? i dont think that an AWD front axle would be different than a 4x4 axle. i mean i would have to figure out a way to keep the solenoid engaged all the time, but that would be easy.
anyway im begining to think that there is something thats preventing me from doing this that i dont know about, because it seems like a pretty good idea to me and i cant find anyone online who has done this. also i cant seem to get any solid answeres from anyone on several message boards. well thanks for the replies guys, i was begining to think that you all didnt like me or something.
so does anyone know what t case i should look for? does anyone else think this is a good idea?

Message: I would look for parts from a AWD Durango. Wasn't AWD offered as an option on the gen III Dakota's? I can't remember. My wife's best friend drives an AWD Durango and has put over 100K on the truck with no problems from the drivetrain. Kind of surprises me as I predicted problems with the AWD system when she bought it new. Guess I was wrong! Good luck with whatever you decide to do, it should be a bad a$$ truck when you are done!

Message: my 2001 Durango has 3 options - 4wd, high range and low range. No 2wd option. Guess that makes it awd.

Message: dano,
Thanks for the response. Fact is, my expertise with 4X4's is restricted to fundamentals learned working on Land Rover's and Jeeps in the 60's when I lived in Africa. My understanding of modern systems is befuddlement.
