Message: are you talking about 5.7 hemi? there is parts for those off the 6.1 hemi, cam heads valves s/c turbos there are plenty parts to make over 500hp. i think you could make more power with the hemi

Message: These new Hemi heads already flow great, and with just minor cleanup work, they really open up, so while the 5.9 parts tend to be cheaper, you'll have to do more to get the 500hp mark. Stock Magnum heads will support 400HP, but will need serious massaging to manage 500.

Message: Thanks for the input. Heres my issue im budgeting 8k for this, I can buy a 360 right now for 500$ and build it up myself with the money left over, or i can buy the hemi with almost nothing left over. with the 7.5k left over will it get me to my goal with the 360 or would i be better of getting the hemi in the long run?

Message: It just occured to me i should be a little more specific. 500 hp is great but im wanting something with decent bottom end and midrange where i could still tow and still have roaring top end when i goto the track. So i guess that would mean high torque numbers between 2000-3000 rpm and high hp numbers at 3500-6200 right?

Message: if this is going in a dakota i would go with the 5.7 hemi. those motors are real tough stock. the motor is capable of feeding 500hp and you should have a great power band also.
the 360 will be way cheaper but not nearly
as cool!!!!

Message: 500HP with serious low rpm grunt? Get the 360 and stroke it to 408. Easily within your budget with money left over.

Message: Thanx much for the input. Im going to with the 5.9 if it will be that much cheaper to get to my goal. That means more money to spend on suspension and body work he he :-P. Is there anywhere i can get a step by step guide to building this motor including part numbers? I have some experience building motors even though i do alignments on diesel trucks.

Message: i have a 2000 dakota with a 5.7 HEMI fabricated in it. i had a cam, cold air intake, headers, duel racing exhaust, free flow cat, chip, throtalbody spacer, its producing 450+hp but i havent took it to the track yet, i know it isnt running a 10 or anything, but i get on all the hemi rams w/ease now. plus my manual 3.55 gears helps deal with the power pretty well.
