Subject: first night at the track!! IP: Logged
Message: well i took my new dakota to the track tonight. here's the specs:
04 ext cab dakota 4.7 2wd auto
just installed h.o. cams two weeks ago, that's my only current mod although it came with nice sounding exhaust.
r/t .498 (first time in 8 years)
60' 2.281
1/8 10.176
1/4 15.926 @84.70
first of all, what do you guys think of the numbers. i think that's a good 60' time. as i can recall i told my brother before the race 2.2 was a good time to shoot for, kinda cool i hit it right on the head. what about the quarter mile time?
second of all, how much do they vary if you run like three or four times. truck hooked up fine as i remember. i have lsd 3.55 rear. what might it have done later that night?
third of all, i have paid for 4.10 gears and am wondering how much of a difference this usually makes? thanks for input. jasonsdakota

Message: Hmm looks like you may be in some higher altitude to be new 16 with a 2WD Dakota.
My 4X4 is close to 16 flat now and another guy I met here raced his 4.7 auto 2WD at the same track and got low 15's pretty much stock.
We are around 1,000 ft alt. If you are higher, it will be a loss in power the higher you get.
Did you race it just once or many times?
Also if you spun the wheels like mine used to, drop the pressure in the tires.
BTW. Hemi 2WD QC Rams are SUB 16 seconds trucks stock around here :)

Message: after i did some looking into average times, it did seem a little shabby. i do have the 3.55 and an auto. that's not exactally a race combination. i only ran once. my brothers stock 4x4 silverado ext cab with 5.3 ran 16.5 last year, if that does anything to help guage if that's normal or not. i only ran once. so it's not like i posted my best time ever, on the coldest day ever. it's just the one i got.
what do you think the 4.10 gears will do? does it just help e.t.'s or will it help mph too?

Message: my best is a 15.7sec 1/4 2.3 60' 3.55 gear LSDless with traction problems. thats a 5.2 with intake exhaust.
and my friends silverados are around that for a 4x4 5.3
the 4.10 i would think would make a huge impact in the trucks acceleration. help the tap speed and the times.
those times are ok but not great. make a Cold Air Intake for the truck that will help with aiding the cams and exhaust.

Message: I was still curious to the elevation where he races. That can make a big difference from one race track to another when you are N/A.
You may get better with more runs. Mine varied a little especially when I messed up or really spun. I think I even got as bad as 17 seconds once!

Message: some said it was a slow night at the track. a 05 black ss 6.0 silverado with 2wd (that's right only 4000 made) ran a 16 according to the guy cause he had traction problems. his best there was a 14.9 he said.
i want to go back, wife permitting, after i get the 4.10 gears. that will be the time that really matters. who cares what it used to run. what it runs when it's done is what matters. MAYBE i'll get back to see if a different night or just a different run will be faster before the 4.10s but it's not like i ran a 17.
i don't know our elevation but it's probably close to sea level. i'm in maryland by the chesapeake bay so how high can that be. budds creek (maryland international raceway) is where i ran. 70 degree night is not exactally a e.t. killer but perhaps just another run or two would have seen lower numbers. who knows? wish me luck after the gears.

Message: Cool. They are also sellin' the crappy gas this time of year as well :(
I may be going to the track this weekend to see if we made any progress on my bro in law's 318 Ram. I may run mine once to benchmark his.
"Pinks" is supposed to film there (SpeedWorld) again later this month too :)

Message: i am graphitedaks bro in law. i have a fairly stock 5.2 ram 4x2 and ran mid 16sec. 1/4 mile times.
now i have a turbo w/ 5psi and we raced an 4x4 454 chevy last weekend and iwas much faster on the street than it. that was w/no intercooler either.
now i have intercooler and just need more fuel and i can turn up the boost. so i should be in 15's hopefuly lower.

Message: 4:10s will help your ET but is not likely going to have much impact on your top speed. Generally speaking, if you want ET, you put in lower gears (higher numerically) and if you want speed, use a higher gear. A cheaper way to get where you want to be is a smaller diameter tire. That's the same effect as changing gears, or do both. Calculate using the rolling radius, not the overall diameter. The overdive ratio in 4th means you can go with pretty radical gear ratios but you will eventually reach the point where using it on the street will be a pain.
Good Luck....
