Subject: Ported heads on 5.2 IP: Logged
Message: I wanted to know if anyone is running ported stock heads on their dakota. I figure it's probably worth 25-30 hp with a professional port.
Thanks,

Message: ported heads will do absolutely nothing unless the motor is modified throughout. save your money.

Message: I agree. If you have the heads off for some other reason, like a rebuild, then I think it's worth while to spend a little time cleaning them up a bit, and doing a simple port match. It's almost free, and only takes a couple hours of your time.
But to pull the heads and send them to a pro is really a waste of time and money.

Message: i disagree that ported heads will do nothing. if that is the case, why are dakota guys always putting in a cam or changing rocker arms? to get more air into the pistons. porting the heads will have the same effect as swapping the cam. torque gains, probably raising the rpm range, and some good top end.
i do agree that some mods would go better with ported heads, like m1 intake, gears to get into the newly found horsepower quicker, stuff like that.
however, i'm not sure it's the most cost effective way. look into cam swap or rocker arms first. more bang for your buck.

Message: jasonsdakota, will you explain to me how ported heads will increase the air/fuel volume?

Message: i,m not jasonsdakota but i,ll try to explain how this will help, not as much without other mods like cam, rockers, headers etc.
moving air faster and easier without the interference in the poor factory casings
unshroud the valves by opening up the pockets around the valves is a big help
smoothing out transitions in the ports helps the flow along with port matching gaskets, intake to heads, heads to exhaust
don,t polish the intake ports just smoothin out ports this will help keep the air/fuel mixed
but polish the exhaust side this help flow, this is a area some don,t address,[example if your heads flow 200cfm of air on the intake side, you should flow 75-80% 150-160cfm on the exhaust side]
second and more importantly don,t go crazy on porting and polishing just clean things up some,if its flow numbers are in rpm range you don,t or hardly ever use then this can hurt performance in the rpms you normally run in
D5.2 if your going to spend $500 plus for a professional to port your heads have you thought about buying a set of elderbrock heads?hughes engines was getting them, just a thought

Message: simply by letting more air into the pistons. you can do this by lifting the valves higher (high lift cam) or by holding them open longer (high duration cam) or by opening up the hole the air comes in and goes out.
for example, many aftermarket companies sell heads gaining serious horsepower with just a head swap because they're 2.02 intake and 1.90" exhaust. this is a little bigger than ours. even different high performance trucks have bigger valves than regular trucks. hence the more air in, the more fuel you can add, the stronger the power stroke on each rpm. if you do this and a cam, you're asking for high rpm power, sometimes too high, or you might match it up great and get a real street machine.
just go with what will give you the best bang for the buck, or whatever coincides with your future plans for your truck.

Message: Sounds like some people have not done their homework. On stock heads, the small casting imperfections don't rob enough power to worry about.
If you pull the heads, ship them off to a pro, and then install them, you might - maybe - pick up 10-12 hp on the top end. And that's a big maybe. There are some many restrictions to power production that need to be fixed before the benifits of porting can be realized.
But you have also spent close to $600, If you opt for bigger valves, you'll spend another $150-200'ish. You should also mill the heads to get more compression. That's another $100'ish. And the truck is down for a couple of weeks, if not longer.
OTOH, how much power can you make with a set of 1.7 rocker arms? A lot less money, and only a few hours work.
If you really think you need better heads, you can buy a set of prepped R/T heads from some one like Hughes and use yours for a core. Or buy alum edelbrocks for close to $2K. But with stock intake and exhaust, you won't even come close to their full potential.
