Message: there is a tool for it. if you get a flat head screwdriver and give them a little push from behind they normally come out.

Message: Is the engine still in the truck? If so, you'll have a tough time pushing them out from the back.
After a lot of miles, varnish can build up and make the lifters a little difficult to get out. Rotate the engine so the lifter is pushed up in the bore. Spray them with a litte PB Blaster. Grab them with a pair of 90* needle nose pliers. You should be able to get them out that way.
Be sure and clean the bores out really well before replacing the lifters. Get that varnish out of there.

Message: Thx guys -
I gave one a try and decided to call it a night.
Whats left of the motor is in the truck - this weekend I am taking out the lifters, water pump, timing gear... To install my new cam when I get it. (ordered)

Message: It seems my lifters are stuck - I can pull them out 1/4 inch and it stops as if there is something holding them in. I am afraid of marring them if I use pliers.

Moe, i did a search for "lifter reomovers" and found these tools for removing stubborn lifters. I would advise you to hone the lifter bores if it appears that the stuck lifters scored the lifter bore. dont worry, the hone will not remove material from the lifter bore, it'll just remove the scratches and or high spots left when the stuck lifter was removed. See pic/link below for different tools.
