Message: what do you want to do? IMHO, if you really like the truck you have now(i.e. color, options, etc...) i'd keep it and do the engine swap.
take what everyone else says with a grain of salt.
that's my .02

Message: If all you want is a truck with a v8 then by all means sell what you have and buy what you want. If you want to build up a truck with a v8 then you might as well work with what you have because you going to be tearing it all down anyway.
It's really your call.

Message: I have rode/drove several. Diffarant years then my 99 CC 5.2L and a few the same year . not one felt near as good as my own which I bought new loaded SLT. Newest I tried was 04. Same as mine except for a few options.there's nothing like your own truck.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Not too mention the fact you swapped it yourself is an accomplishment many wont do. And you will really know your truck inside and out once you do something like that.
I'm in the process of installing a 4.7 Dodge engine into a 1974 Duster. Swapping a 5.9 into a Dakota should be cake compared to that!

Message: engine swaps are a breeze if you have a few of the right tools
rebuilding an engine i have yet to try
i lack the motivation to do that, for now anyway
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Message: I've transplanted one engine for another (of choice) a dozen times or so. Many where V6 to V8.
But that was back in the day when I only drove cheap used cars. And no emissions where I lived.
It's always fun putting in what you REALLY WANTED.
