I no I could have gotten into the high fourteens with a better start cause everybody said I had late reaction time, and this was my first time running at a track. now my dad flipped out when he realized I went racing now he won't let me go anymore cause he thinks its bad cause of vechile abuse he says and its dangerous. please send as many replies as possible to help me out and convince my dad that racing isn't that abusive and dangerouse. PLEASE or I'll never get my 14's !

Just sit down with your dad and calmly explain to him the governing rules of the sport and the safetys in place. Sure there are dangers but I personally feel that there are more dangers in driving down the street then on the track. As far as the abuse of the vehicle goes proper maintenance and good driving will keep your vehicle running just as long as the next guys.

I stand with 92dakguy. But if yur dad is paying for the truck and everything else that goes with it (gas, maintanance, insurance, etc.)You need to abide by his wishes or take over al costs.

I know that parental feature. I pay for every aspect of mine, but am not allowed a lift.

But yeah, inviting him may help with this. He will see it is relitivley safe. And if your really lucky maybe he will buy you a rollcage. Or get really invilved and buy you a supercharger, and a NOS.

From my experience with my old "ProStreet" Class BB Camaro (1976 Model with transplanted engine), my dad always said "You're just breaking the car...no use in racing."

After I took him to the track with me...he loved it. (Still complained about the noise...but seriously loved it. Helped me get the ProJection-II System for the old Camaro as well.)

Talk with him and bring him out there. Unfortunately, racing does stress the engine and drivetrain...there's just no way around that...but with the proper equipment, it'll hold up without any problems.

You could look at it this way, not only will this help you learn about cars and trucks but it will also help keep you out of trouble.
I am 33 and am reliving my childhood through my sons. I can only imagine what is going to happen when they ask for the keys to the truck......GULP

Ask him if he would rather have you get caught for racing on a public highway. Or would he prefer you race in a controlled environment like the drag strip. Because you are going to race the truck one way or another.
However, if he is paying for the truck and maintanence, then I would say you have to abide by his rules.

Its safer then driving on a highway. Come on let him race. Its not like its a top fuel drag car. And doing the quarter mile at full throtle in your vehical is not that bad i have a 99 durango 5.9 and do the quarter mile full throtle where ever i can. It has over 200000 on it and i drive the piss out of it. Racing is a good sport. It teaches you about cars and how to drive. I started racing at the track 3 years ago in which i build a camaro from the ground up. I love cars and conisider myself to be very techniclly minded. All in all the skills that can be picked up at the track are worth much more then the truck. And will help you succeed in the future in other things. Or it will just be a good hobbie. But if your dad won't let you take his truck then go and get a used peice of crap for 1300 put a hemi in it and go racing. Good luck.

I am 23 and every since I was 16 and started getting into drag racing, my dad hated it but I did it anyway. One day I decided to take him to Mopar day at Houston Raceway Park in baytown and he fell in love with the sport. Now I can't keep him away from the track.

jdakota,
I don't really know what to tell you. I really need to talk to your dad. I am 52. Raised 2 carnuts. The oldest doesn't race anymore but the youngest (24 yrs.) has a 11.33 car and a 11.40 bike. He wanted to drag race and told me so at age 16. I took him to the track with my 17 second Ranger and taught him the basics. He has done it ever since. Sure, things break but he learned to fix them. His interest in racing and motors lead him to go to college to become a mechanical engineer. He graduated 2nd in his class due in no small part to his understanding of mechanical things. While I am at work right now, he is at the drag strip. He doesn't smoke, drink, or do drugs. Drag racing and dirt bikes is how we get our highs.
My oldest son got to 12.3s in his Mustang and quit. He built a '23 tee bucket with a 327 and 6-71 blower. He is building a Cobra replica now. He stays out of trouble also. I am very proud of both of them.
