I finished the install Saturday. Now I can cruse at 70mph at about 24-2500 rpm in OD. I can't wait until they are broke in. The low end feels like it will even smoke the mudders. I'll know after the 500 mile break in. This is the best mod I have done so far! I actually would recommend it first. The difference makes even a stock engine come alive.

How you'd recalibrated the speedometer? I changed to 4.10 and it was 10-15mph off. With 4.56 it should be even more.

with the superchips tuner, you can adjust your speedo. the only problem is is that it askes for tire size not gears. but if you can figure out the difference in gearing and relate it to the "tire size" then you could recalibrate the speedo.

95V6 - there is no need to recalibrate for a gear change with the newer trucks; the speedo is driven off a tone ring in the rear - not off the tranny.

Yup what Kowalski said.

Only need to recalibrate for tire size changes.

The 4.56 gears are one of the best mods you can do for the money.

With my 29's (stock height) I'm not that bad in the RPM's at 65 to 70. Right where I need to be when towing and all. The only thing i may need to change is swapping my dual glass packs for flowmasters. Kind of loud in the cab. I like it. the wife don't.

Is it worth to pay to have them installed or is it worth the labor to do it yourself?

if you dont know how to do it. its better to let someone do it for you. if I remember you need to take both wheels off and when you unbolt everything in the pumpkin you need to slide the axle shafts out some. to get the gears out and in. also something about shims and so on. graphitedak I think has a write up from when he did his 4.56 gear swaps.

The best write up is on Randy's Ring and Pinion.
http://www.ring-pinion.com/content/technicalhelp/default.asp?pid=69

But I did take pix as always available on my web.

The only reason you have to remove the wheels is IF you have disc brakes like mine. Then the disc brakes stops the shaft from sliding out.
With drum brakes you can simply leave the wheels on as the drum will pop off of the shoes once past the lip on the drums. Depending on wear.

You will need an impact capable of ~500 Ft Lbs to crush the sruch sleave. And if you do it yourself, learn from my mistake. Order the FULL INSTALLATION KIT as Autozone/checker etc do NOT have these bearings even if they THINK they do. They are wrong. I had to order form the dealer.

It's all worth it and it's quite the experience compared to any other job you may tackle on your Dak :)

Isn't the tone ring on the rear differential only for ABS function? I think that the speedo signal still comes from the VSS on the driver's side of the transmission...

Either way; I wouldn't think you'd have to recalibrate for ring and pinion swaps: just for tire size changes-- right or wrong?

Yes, Kowalski, you're right, I remember now seeing this in some thread before - new trucks do not need to recalibrate. I had to buy jet speedo calibrating module for my gears and I'm still tweaking it trying to get the right correction. It's not very user friendly.

Purple 1 - if the signal came off the tranny (it doesn't) like the older trucks, you'd have to recalibrate like 95V6. A gear change would affect that in the same way as a tire height change.
