Subject: Dak dual exhaust pipe diameters? IP: Logged
Message: Hello everyone,
I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death ten times over, but I've finally decided just to put on a dual exhaust on my 4.7L 00 Dak rather than mess with just replacing that goofy stock muffler. I'm going to be going with a Flowmaster Super 40. My question is, is it wise to go with the 2.5" inlet and dual 2.25" outlets? Not sure if that will keep backpressure in-check (or lessen it as the case may be) or will the smaller pipe size cause issues? I am thinking that if I go with the dual 2.5" outlets, I may end up losing power. Suggestions, anyone?

Message: i would go with the 2.25 outlets. you may lose some back pressure but not much. are you doing the install yourself? because i did my dakota and just 2 days ago i did my friends. so i can give you some advice if needed?

Message: Well, I think I just mis-worded my statement. Sorry. :( I don't want any more backpressure than what is in a stock system. Having the same amount is agreeable, having even less is nothing I'm gonna argue about. ;) Just didn't know if the 2.25" outlets were a better idea than the 2.5" outlets or not. Do most dual-outlet mufflers for Dakotas have a center inlet, or are they typically offset?
Toolfan, if I can muster the ingenuity and a friend, I may just try and do it myself since clamps are pretty easy to manage. If I have problems though, I'll know who to ask. Any beforehand tips before I totally bork something though is always appreciated. Thanks!

Message: the muffler doesn't give a whole lot of back pressure anyway. the cat and the resonators give alot of back pressure and like n56629 said why do you need it!!
if you do decide to do the muffler you will need
sawzall/14in socket and breaker bar if the bolts are seized/and good luck with the rubber mounts there not easy to get off!! with the sawsall you will want to make a cut right before the muffler because that muffler will not just come off with a hammer and a bad attitude.

True that!
Well you said you wanted DUAL EXHAUST but now that I see you mention the single in/dual out muffler, it sounds like you are just going to spit the single exhaust to two at teh muffler.
In that case. You wont have dual exhaust. Just dual outlets. Which for some reason sometimes don't even sound any better than the single out.
If you want dual out, do duals all the way :)

Message: Haha! Well, I guess I'll be going with a half-a$$ "dual" exhaust then. ;) I'd love to get a true dual setup, but unfortunately I can't afford it right now with all the additional things I want to do with this truck.
I'll let everyone know how it turns out and how many boxes of bandaids I used. Thanks for the suggestions.

Message: Graphite, you have a single exit exhaust, don't you? Are your inlet/outlets offset? centered? offset/centered?
