Message: It has very little to do with the size. You can have a 408 small block or 383 big block. It has more to do with identifying one basic block from the other. Small blocks tend to be narrower than their big brothers but can have just as big a bore. Stroke also tends to be shorter. Ford, GM and Chrysler have all had at least two models of v8s usually referred to as big and small block.

Message: Early on, the same block was used for everything from a 318-426. The blocks had enough meat in them to allow over .090" boring, all to accomodate a wide variety of displacements, while also using the same bottom-end for varying strokes. As casting techniques became more sophisticated, it became possible to fashion blocks with smaller outer dimensions and tighter internal clearances that were capable of delivering displacements into the mid-300's. These blocks were also 150-200 lbs lighter than the larger blocks, making them ideal for use in smaller cars.
One oddball in this is the Mopar V10. The initial 488 cubic inch version was based on the 5.9L V8, but having 2 extra cylinders makes it one of the larger automotive engines, despite being built on a smallblock casting.
As mentioned, strokers are able to offer big block displacement in a smallblock package.

Message: like gen1 said, nothing about size in cubic inches. The biggest determining factor is the deck height.
... and the big blocks are like 4" longer than the small blocks (front to back).

Message: Big Block going in my little Duster :)
Intense, did you say you may swap out the 400 for a 440 some day?
I've noticed that they make a butt load more aftermarket now for the 440 (or similar BB).
My wife told her Dad about it. She recently told me he said it "...was too much for that car".
Who says?????

Message: if i can find the 440 cheap enough.. but it might not be worth the weight difference.. i'm already making a pretty damn good amount of power.
the only things that are not interchangeable on the B and R/B motors are the intake manifolds and distributors.. so it's safe to say there are plenty of parts for the 400 ..just remember, the B motor has been around a lot longer than the R/B.

Message: when i said manifold and distributor, of course i figure it is already common knowledge that the crank/rods/pistons wont interchange (without machine work).
