Subject: Manual Rack & pinion For Gen II? IP: Logged
Message: Does anybody know if any 2wd gen II dakotas came with manual rack and pinion steering? Or if the gen 1 did and it would fit in a gen II?

Message: I am guessing that you're trying to save weight, and/or trying to free up some HP.
You can use the stock power rack. Remove the lines, and replace the with a cap. Be sure adrill a very small hole in the cap to allow air to move in and out.
Of course, this hole may be a problem of you drive in the rain/mud/water a lot. Then you can put a nipple on the cap, and run a vacume line up under the hood and connect it to a small filter, just like on a front differential.

Message: Except you'd be dripping fluid every time you turned and you would leave puddles where you park and it would go dry and start rusting and making noise and would be harder to turn and make your arms sore and maybe you would wreck your truck so you probably better not do it.

Just don't turn while sitting dead still, get some motion and then start turning if you must turn.
Heidts has some great manual units that will bolt right on in place of the stock power units.
Heidts Steering Components
Their base manual rack and pinion set up will bolt right in place of the Dakota Power Unit.
I'm an Authorized Heidts Dealer here in South Texas.

Message: I have a 99 dakota 2wd that had 3.9 v-6 in it, i
built it into a 2wd pull truck and with the v-8
motor sitting as far forward as i can get it i am
looking to see if i can get manual rack n pinion
to replace the original power one with hoses
capped, with motor sitting over front it can only
be turned when in motion, so far all i can find
is power replacements.
