I have a 93 supercharged 318. the motor stock except for the headers, Msd... Will changing my throttle body to a larger one help to gain a few ponies? I would think that the boost would overide the need for a larger throttlebody.

Any restriction at the intake will cost power.

Contact Dan at FastMan.com for application information. I have one of his TBs on my '00 QC/5.9/KBs/c and am very pleased with the package performance from my near-3-ton truck.

When funds permit, I plan adding a set of Stan's Long Tube headers and Knight water injection (total installed, another +$1,800 invested). That should complete what I can do for power and dependability with my Dakota, and bring the rwhp from now 260 to 286+ and tq from 326 to 358+. (Heat saturation from towing affects performance of the s/c, and I am expecting the water injection should minimize this problem).

I have replaced the original pulley on my vortech to one size smaller - woke up the motor again! This is why I'm starting to think I need to open up the intake a bit - when I look up FastMan.com I get a page that says tha page is for sale. ?

Actually it's thefastman.com

Several people here, including me, can do the job a whole lot cheaper and just as good. However, I don't usually recommend using a stock tb at high boost because of the poor seal. What SC and how much boost are you running?

You are right about the size. You can only force so much air into the engine at any given boost. As boost increases, however, you need to make more air available. If you are only running 6# of boost you can probably get by with a stock tb. If you are up to 10-12# or more you need a minimum of a 52mm.

Imagine trying to use 100# of boost thru a single one inch venturi and you will get the picture. Given enough time it will pass sufficient air. Unfortunately your intake valve is only open for just so long and if you can't get enough air into during that period of time it won't matter how much boost your have.

I would recommend getting a TB bored out by either N56629 or daveshotdako instead of paying alot more for a larger TB from the jerks at The Fastman. Just my two cents.

318superdak-
Check out the V6 Dakotas forum under the thread "custom throttle body boring". You'll find all of Dave's info there. He currently has one already made for $175 + shipping. It's a stock V6 TB bored out to 48mm. Talk to him and he'll tell you alot more.

since you have a v8, i can bore it larger than 48mm like i do the v6 tbs. i believe that i can bore yours to a 52mm. im not sure what you can buy for the v8s but if you can buy it, i can bore one to that size. it took me three and a half hours to bore one last saturday. if you have any questions, you can e-mail me at davethomas2184@yahoo.com. thanks for gettin my name out there gunner. your posts have given me some business already and i really need it right now. im still waitin to here some dyno numbers from ya.

The stock v8 is 48mm with the step and 50mm with it removed. It can further be bored to 52mm.

Stick with the 50mm when only slightly modified, 52mm when moderately modified and 53mm and up only when extensively modified which would include a cam, head and valve work, fully ported and performance exhaust system including headers.

Either one of these guys will do a good job.

I ported my own TB with a dremel and a hacksaw. Not pretty, and all I did was remove the air horns, torque step in the bores and try to round off the bore. It did make a difference, but I view it as only a temp solution. Once I get my new motor in I will be looking for a 52mm TB. I doubt I will get to the point of needing anything larger for what I plan to do.

OnlineAutoram you have the 4.7 v8. it only has one bore on the tb measuring 70mm, whereas the 5.2/5.9 has two bores measuring 50mm each. just letting you know the difference and why yours sounds bigger when it is actually the same or smaller. not trying to knock you or anything, just trying to inform you. i wish that i would have gotten a v8 but at the time, i couldnt afford it and i thought that i would be saving on gas with the v6. but i have a heavy quad cab and i would have gotten the same if not better mpg (not to mention twice the power) with a v8.

daveshotdako - I am considering having you do my throttle body and may contact you via e-mail - but in the intrest of this thread can you explain what you do with the butterfly? (can I send you the complete throttle body w/ butterfly) If you enlarge the bore, do you then enlarge the butterfly? Also do you have a before and after picture of your work to a 318 throttle body? I am running a vortech supercharger with a 2.95 pulley (kit came with 3.12). And I do have a very slight leak under the throttle body. I have run this supercharger for almost 50,000 miles and have stomped my motor for all its worth - and it just keeps goin.

hey 318superdak, i do not have any pics of a 318 tb but i do have pics of a v6 tb. this is what i do to tbs... first i clean and dissasemble. then i mill the airhorns off the top. then i smooth the whole top surface of the tb. next, i set it up on my cnc mill and program it to mill out the bores leaving about .005. then i use a boring bar in the mill to finish the bores precisely. next i polish the bores to a very high finish.(almost mirror) next, i radius the top edge of the bores and smooth any sharp corners. then i make new larger throttle plates to match the bore size. then i make an s-bolt out of 1/4-20 threaded rod. then i assemble it all and its done. it takes me about 3.5 hours to comlpete one tb. send me an e-mail at davethomas2184@yahoo.com if your interested.

Kind of an unrelated question, What is a throttle body spacer, and what does it do? I found a web site claiming that their spacers gave up to a 20hp gain. I find this hard to believe, since it just looks like a piece of one inch thick metal that goes in between the tb and intake manifold.

it works great as an expensive paper weight. the way that our intakes are designed, these do nothing but create turbulance which robs hp. save your money and get a cold air intake, brass cap and rotor, new wires. there are also quite a few other mods that you can do for cheap/free. i will find a link to a site for you to check out.
