Subject: just a few questions IP: Logged
Message: Hello sirs.
I recently read about Underdrive pulleys on dakotas. I don't know much about these or what they claim to do as I don't know anyone personally that as added these. Any info on what they do and how they can improve performance? Also I was wondering what aftermarket products are helpful in prolonging engine life. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Message: Underdrive pulleys are used to slow down the operation of crank driven accesories...such as the power steering pump, alternator, etc. Slowing these down helps to free up some extra horsepower since the engine does not have to work so hard. "MARCH", who is well known for their pulley systems claim around a 15HP gain from their complete system. However, just like you, I don't know anyone who has used one so I can't say for sure if you will see a gain.
As for prolonging engine life, maintenance is the key. Proper vehicle maintanance is critical for engine life, and vehicle life for that matter. Keeping your oil changed, your engine tuned, etc., with the proper parts...is mandatory to keep your vehicle healthy. If you put junk in it, you'll get junk out of it. Their are some oil additives you can use that claim they prolong engine wear, but I really don't believe in any additives except for a fuel system treatment.
If you take care of your ride, it'll take care of you. Just remember, nothing lasts forever, and everything breaks.

Your comment on oil additives to prolong engine wear prompts me to add:
Don't use them. Especially those with PTFE (Teflon). The first thing the PTFE resins do is clog the oil filter, because they can't pass through the filter paper. Now that the filter is clogged, usually within about 5 minutes, the oil filter bypass valve opens and no more oil filtering happens.

The only thing you should ever add to your oil is more oil, to top off when needed. Whether you've chosen to use synthetic or regular, stay with name brand good quality oil, check the level often and change it regularly.

Message: What DanK said about the oil- I couldn't have put it better myself. Another thing is with aditives like "greased lightening", or putting in a heavier weight oil for "cold starting", just don't do it. Modern engines are built to tighter tolerances than older engines, hence the need for lighter oils. A heavier oil is just going to starve the bearing surfaces for the lubrication.
About underdrives, most people don't bother with them because they're not worth it in many applications. From my readings, the Hot Rod tests usually only show around 5 hp from an underdrive pulley set. It also decreases the ouput of your alternator, which can put more strain on your battery. I think your money would be better spent on a chip or a throttle body or exhaust or even a cold air kit.

Message: I agree with the guys above on their points. Just for some extra info, I worked for a Dodge dealership and Chrysler actually put out a TSB saying NOT to use oil additives. Regular oil changes will keep it clean. Like DanK said, stay with a good quality, name brand oil and make sure to get a good oil filter to compliment that oil. Have fun!
