hello, the following question is not directed to environmentalists, if you feel you are in this category get out. Will removing the cat hurt performance or make the exhaust louder?

Yes, it will be louder. Will it sound like your Chevy- no. Personally I think a custom dual exhaust would sound the best. Run tube headers, hi flow cats, 2.5" exhaust pipe w/ 40 series Flows and 3.5" tips.

I heard that a single exhaust would be louder.

I cut out my cat, and my hp's and mpg's increased a little. I didnt notice much on sound because I already had a "catback" exhaust on there, with a Borla muffler and custom pipes.

I am not sure how much of a sound difference you will see from a cat removal. I think most of an exhaust's sound will come from the muffler you select. If you want, you could install flanges on before and after your cat, and that will allow you to disconnect it whenever you want (for experimental reasons).

Probally those three-bolt jobs, like where the exhaust hooks into the manifolds?

Need welding experiance though. It's an intriguing idea...

That is exactly what a flange is. Its about 3 or 4 bolts, and you can take out your cat whenever you want. However, of course, if your cat was 12" long, you will need a 12" pipe to fill in the space, and you will just bolt it on there. My brother does this for his Nissan 300 ZX when emissions come due every year!

YEP! That must be him. He works for minimum wage at some inspection station in Ohio sniffing exhaust fumes for a living. It's killed what few brain cells he had left after he was born with the unbiblical cord wrapped around his neck.

Please excuse me I know this is a Dodge group but I have a '90 Lumina with a rattling catalytic converter that has just passed the emissions inspection. Do I still need to have it replaced even though it just passed the emissions test? Thank you.
