Subject: Knocking? type sound at high rpm IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 dakota r/t with 76,000 miles on it and at about 4000-5500 rpm I get a knocking type sound. Its hard to describe the sound. It does it about 2 times a second average but not consistantly. It may do a few in a row and then stop for a second and do it some more. Obviously Im hearing this at higher speeds like the top of 2nd and 3rd gears at WOT when its in that range long enough to hear it. Any ideas to what this could be?

Message: It might be a blow gasket between the intake and block or heads, "Plenum" gasket I think. Look down your throttle bodie and see if there's oil in the bottom. I may be way off, but something to check anyway.

Message: sounds like it COULD be ignition related. Like a coil, or the timing a little bit off. I would put a light on it first just to be safe, unless you don't have a light. A coil would be too expensive to guess on. Check the plugs- they could tell you a lot about what's going on. It is POSSIBLE that a knock sensor is going bad, but I think the check engine light would be on if that were the case.
01R/T could be right too- from what I've been reading on the forum it's not an uncommon problem.
Otherwise, good luck.

Message: Thank you 01 R/T, thats got to be it because there is definitely oil in there now that i checked. Im glad thats only the problem because that shouldn't be a hard or expensive fix if I do it myself. Also thank you Craig for your input, I knew it wasn't timing related or plugs because I checked the timing and I also changed the plugs and plug wires and when I took out the old plugs they were in very good shape, but thank you just the same. | Changed manifold pan gaskt, but still pings IP: Logged
Message: Well I replaced the intake manifold pan gasket (apparently thats what the parts dept. calls it) Wasn't too difficult jsut really time consuming, pretty much took all day. It definitely needed to be replaced. However I drove it about 100 miles since then and it is still making the pinging type sound. I changed my plugs, wires, and cap and rotor, and changed to a 180 stat. Do you think that maybe there is built up carbon deposits in the combustion chamber or maybe there is some slack in the timing chain and maybe I should change that too? Has anyone else had this problem?

Message: 87 which is what it recomends, im going to try some premium to see if it matters but there should be no reason to, with the compression ratio of the engine it shouldnt need anything higher. infact it says somewhere in the book that continuously running higher octane can somehow damage some part of the fuel system. i dont remember how or what part but it wouldnt kill it to use higher octane every once and a while. point is there has to be something that isn't right in the engine for it to do it. running a higher octane gas would just be a temporary patch there still would be a problem.
