Message: alright, i have a 03 r/t with the 3 cats. would i see any horsepower gains if i put a cutout right after the 2 pre-cats right where is turns into one pipe? so i would be dropping the 3rd cat and muffler.

If there are O2 sensors at the 3rd cat, you will see the check engine light very soon after you you activate the cutout.
Secondly, you may be able to tell the difference with the cutout at that location.
And it's gonna be loud.

Message: Ran around with just a Y-pipe today and did not notice much of a loss. It kinda seems like you lose some power but thats just because you hear your engine roar and think it is gaining RPM but it really is barley trying. I cant even explain the noise it puts out. Loud doesnt even cut it. My buddy said he could here me when I left over a mile away.

Message: i have an idea!
what if you weld a spring-loaded hinge onto the cut-out and the spring was tuned so that it held the cover shut until the rpm's were high enough to push the hinge open with backpressure? you wouldnt lose low end torque, but get that high end punch without having to play with an electric cut-out...

Message: Since the hinged cutout plate would only open enough to reduce pressure you would simply have an exhaust leak.
