 Subject: 4.7 smoking bad, whats the deal??

I was on my way to the bookstore to pick up some new mopar mags when this cavalier Z24 pulls up. I looked over and noticed that it was an 80's model, pretty beat up, so I thought it would be an easy kill (fat woman didn't look like a good driver either). I got her off the line easy, but then, just as the tach hit the rev limiter (I guess that's what it is because it just wouldn't go anymore), I heard a thud. I shifted to second and the truck felt like it had only about half power, which would be about 200hp. It was smoking real bad. Are there any TSB's out for smoking trucks?? Any idea why it would be smoking?

I hate to hear of bad things happening to a Dakota, but somehow it takes a little of the bite off knowing it happened while someone was racing a beat up Z24 driven by a woman that is challenged with an overweight problem.
Hmmm...gotta wonder how much support you could have gotten, Jeffster, if you hadn't copped such an attitude in prior posts, huh?
Honestly though, I don't like to hear that you have truck troubles. Chalk it up as a learning experience, and move on. You'll probably get lucky and mopar will fix it under "warranty".

How far into the tach's redline were you when this problem developed?
<----- still has a terrible visual of a (now smoking) Dakota racing a "fat woman didn't look like a good driver either" in a beat up 80's model Z24 cavalier. You best lay off the R/T's for awhile. You are not quite ready.

Jeffster, I run my truck hard sometimes too (though not THAT hard - damn, boy, how much money for mods you got??!), but I would suggest you drive it or (more prudently but expensively) have it towed to your Dodge dealer; usually they'll charge like $20 or so to have it even looked at if the warranty doesn't cover it and you take it elsewhere to be fixed, but at least they *should* be able to figure the problem for your $$, and you can go from there. Just don't let them fix it - they'll rob you blind.
Good luck, man; tell us what blew! I put $10 via PayPal on the head(s) if anyone would like to challenge - and I know next to nothing about engines at this point - pistons make the crankshaft or crank rotate, right? All I know is that forged pistons might rattle when the engine's cold. Anyway, reckon lack of compression on one side, and am allowed to do so because my current residence is in Texas so "reckon" is mine to use. -tk

Why wouldnt warranty cover it,never saw any clause that said no going to the rpm limits,why did they put a limiter then shouldnt make a difference how much u rev it,they set the limit soooo call your 1-800 # any where in north america by the way and they will fix it,they have to its brand new an dit has a warranty so wtf

I have a friend (albeit with a Toyota) who lifted his truck a LOT, and they decided that this was why his rack went out. They fixed it in a very half-a$$ed way, and told him to never return because he'd brought it upon himself; essentially, they said that his lift and larger tires and wheels had caused it and that the rack and suspension were no longer warranted for his vehicle. Turns out that when they fixed it they missed a couple parts so he would have laughed last except that now it shimmeys and he has no idea why. As Homer Simpson would say: "DOH!" Sometimes stock is good...
That DC customer service number, BTW, (since I've used it myself) is 1-800-991-1997. Shouldn't call unless you're turned down or unsatified with the fix. Me, I called about a freakin' tailgate rattle which sounds really stupid, but open that $150 optional back window and hear squeaks and it's downright annoying. One day I just plain (angrily) slammed that tailgate really hard after 5-10 trips to the dealership with no fix, and it stopped squeaking and rattling... Guess my emotions are smarter than dealership technicians. And if one of them ever tells you "Your bed shifts because it's on rubber bushings" that's bull$$$$, because the CAB is on bushings and the BED is bolted directly to the frame, which flexes.
I know it wasn't intentional, Art, but you got me started. -tk

I know what your saying but engine breakdown like that,they really have no choice its not alltered and just so you know most engine mods they will not argue about warranty but lifts oh ya forget the warranty,trust me I used to work in a dealership and the 1-800 # I was talking about was the breakdown # you know that little card you get in the mail for breakdows,locked keys no gas etc etc,thats the # I meant they will tow you in,just say hey it started smokin and I didnt want to drive it to make it worse,ive reved mine till it wont no more once in awhile no smoke yet cept from the tires :)dont worry jeffster it will get fixed
maybe the will give ya a viper to drive around while you wait

Art don't listen to these little children on this thread. I just got home from and see somebody is pretending to be me. Pretty sad spending a Friday evening taklking to yourself instead of out enjoying all the honey's out there but to each his own. It's kind of like self masturbation if you ask me. The truck is running great and feels even smoother as the engine breaks in. I have never even reved it to the limiter. I have taken in to a little over 5,600 RPM's but by no means was the engine straining at all.
What's the stock limiter set at anyways Art??
Blizzard by the looks of it is Mike Noballs allthough I didn't know he liked me that way. Sorry Mike/Blizzard I don't bat for that team. (not that there is anything wrong with that)

Hawkeye, check out other sites (moparchat, LS1, Mustangsbesus, etc.). Check out what you get for free and what you get if you pay to join. Read their posts and check for intelligent posts versus dumb or mean spirited posts. Compare all of this to this site. If you find that there are differences then you will be right. Ask yourself why is there a difference. If you find an answer then please share it with us. There are a few good guys on this site but this site has attracted more than it's fair share of idiots, braggers, parrots (people that know nothing but just repeat what they hear), and worse of all - people with a chip on their shoulder. I dont have to check other sites because I dont care about them. I own a Dakota and a Durango. Thats all I care about talking about right now. I do like other vehicles but this is what I own and what I am fixing up. I like it here and this is where I'll stay. If people cant be adults on there own then fine. Not to many Canadians would be willing to buy anything from the U.S on the net anyways. After the exchange you are looking at a ridculous amount of Canadian money. I have found a lot of the same things up here at local performance stores at nearly the same price but in Canuk dollars and I still think they are overpriced.
Life up here sucks especially when we are the most heavily taxed nation in the world!! and make nearly the same wages.
Take Bernd's IAT adjuster for an example. I think it's $40.00. With exchnage and shipping to Canada your talking almost double that $80.00 CAN for a little variable resistor. (great device however) No with our stupid tax rates I would have to earn $130.00 CAN before taxes to end up with $ 80.00 in my pocket. I am starting to get sick just thinking about it!!

I have no photos of me because I don't have that kind of equipment. I to am a member of both clubs and I'm looking foward to the discounts on parts. I should be getting my Mem. Card, etc. soon. I have been joined for about 2 weeks now. Hope they haven't forgot about me! I really like this site, although their are a few idiots on here. But their are DakotaRt also. At least on here I can compare the 4.7L and 5.9L and not have my life threatened.

BTW Smokin up in Canada if you make $60,000 a year you are paying almost 50% tax. $60,000 is the break point for the highest tax braket up here. That is also the lowest point on the entire planet that the highest tax bracket starts. I hate living up here. I live close to the border so mabye I should spend my weekends hanging in Seattle and marry a girl from there if I find someone special. That's about the only way I can get out.
