Subject: Shelby 318 tbi to 360 tbi swap
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking for a recommendation on what engine computer to use for this swap. There are a number of parts listed for the 360/auto combination. So far I have found 4379937 - van and truck 4379899 - truck and 4379923 - HD truck. I skipped the Calif applications. Do any of these work with the A-500 trans? I have heard stories about not shifting to O/D with some computer swaps. Any recommendations out there?

You have to be sure to get a combo that is intended for the 4-speed automatic. A lot of people assume that once the 4-speeds came along, the 3-speeds disappeared, but they didn't. There's a 1995 Ram van at the local yard right now with a V6 Magnum and the A999 or 998...can't remember(3-speed anyway) with 3.55 gears, so it's very possible some of those with no 4-speed shifting got the wrong computer. Don't know individual numbers, but if you ask for the application-specific pcm, meaning RamCharger with 360 and 4-speed auto, it'll work. The 360 wasn't fitted to the A500 at first, only the A518 was used (but the wiring is the same), and it didn't have a lockup converter at first. I mention this because I remember in my Shelby, the lockup would happen shortly after 4th gear engaged, and the delay depended on throttle position. The RamCharger non-lockup computer would energize the OD function as it should, and lockup would typically occur immediately after 4th engaged and there would be no computer interpretation of throttle position. No biggie.
