Subject: Intake manifold and cam matching IP: Logged
Message: So, I spent some time on Summit's website this morning since I couldn't get back to sleep. I found these intakes and cams:
M1 intake -- idle-6000 rpm's
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap -- 1500-6500 rpm's
Crane cam crn-704121 -- 1500-5000 rpm's
Comp cam cca-20-604-9 -- 900-5200 rpm's
Mopar cam kit dcc-5007551 -- idle-6200 rpm's
I think this is probably a no-brainer as far as matching the correct cam with the intake. M1 seems to be the most popular on this site. Which cam, though, do most use with that particular intake?

Message: Your cam choice is really dependent on more factors than that. Where do you want your powerband? What do you use the truck for - daily driver, street truck or race? What other mods - rockers, exhaust, TB, etc. You can put a big cam in an engine and it will run like crap if it is not set up properly. Also, you will need a MP PCM at minimum, or a hypertech/superchips or send the PCM off to be flashed with a custom program.
It also depends on your engine - 5.2 or 5.9? I also don't think the air gap will work on our engines. The only intake I am aware of that is set up for fuel injection is the M1, and make sure you get the right one. There are carbed versions available as well that do not have the bosses for fuel injection. If you are planning on going carb, then that is different.

Message: The AirGap and some M1s are not drilled and reamed for injectors. I see no real need to be concerned about matching the intake to the cam.

I have a 2000 Dakota QC 4x4 w/5.9L. My main purpose is daily driver, but I want the power there when I need it.
The M1 offers power from idle--6000 rpm's. Does this mean I can install a cam which gives power at any point in those rpm's and be good? I don't mind lopey idles as long as there is enough vacuum to run everything else.

Message: Yes.
Try to check the graphics from a dino test, (from each maker) and compare the power produced at differente rpm and make up your mind.
