Subject: Implications of upgrading to a V8 magnum IP: Logged
Message: Hi everybody, I'm 32 and I have a 2000 Dakota Sport (2 door) with 3.9 Litre Magnum V6 in it. I bought it new and it now has 70,000 miles on it. It still runs good but I am thinking about dropping a "360 Magnum 300 Horsepower 360 V8 Crate Motor" in it because I'm a freakin' speed demon and I want more power. I live in California and I've read that I should be concerned about the new emissions I would create with a motor upgrade like the one I want to do. Has anyone else done this in California? Additionally, what else exactly do I need to put on the truck if I upgrade the motor to make it legal in California? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy Moyer

Message: It's a huge hassle to change a 6 to an 8. It gets expensive, and would probably decrease the value and salability of the truck. The Magum engine you're looking at isn't generally recommended for daily drivers because of the cam. I'm not sure if you can bolt on you Magnum parts, either.
Your best bet is to either trade your truck in for one with a 8, or add a blower to your 6.

Message: Andy, the engine you mentioned is intended for carbureted applications. Mopar does offer an MPI 360 crate motor. You would need the computer for V8applications, as well as the harness....or your V6 harness with two wires tied in for the extra two injectors.
Here's a link that kinda sums up what you need, and has a blurb about off-road use.

You'd probably come out better cruising eBay for a 360 Magnum "pull" from a wreck. Often they include the wiring harness and computer. Mine did, as well as the tranny, and full exhaust. It only had 1,500 miles on it, so the price was a good bit higher than many others I have seen since. I've seen several running "pulls" go for $500-$1500 depending on their mileage. Remember, you'll need injectors, fuel rails, throttle body....see where the running pull starts looking good? I'd say as long as you run at least the appropriate OEM exhaust, or aftermarket smog-legal stuff you'd be okay on emissions.

Message: Andy, I had a '99 V6 Club Cab and was thinking along the same lines - 360 crate motor swap. After pricing everything: motor, tranny, harness, fuel rails, computer...whew! I just went looking for an R/T. Found a 2000 R/T black club cab. Wow, what a truck! I'm 42 and plan on keepin' it until I'm old (o.k, older) and ready for a sedan :) Find and R/T, you'll spend the same $$$ and still have a better ride all around.
