Message: I have seen the older postings on V6 power but could use a little help. I am not looking to race or set speed records. I am however looking to increase HP. K&N filters was the easiest. Now i have found a set of headers and a catback that i think fit my needs. a discussion with my overly engineered brother ( i am a complete idiot compared to him)has a disagreement. He says i HAVE to swap out the chip. I dont think i have to and believe i can wait and see how it does first. Any inputs??? Thank you

LOL. Just wondering.
Swapping out your "chip" meaning re programming your PCM would really only be nessessary if you did some major mods like BOOST or something really. You COULD get a few HP by geting a programmer like the SuperChips. But with a stock engine who knows how much. Mainly it would give you more ignition advance if you were able to use 91 or better octane fuel.
I'm running the SuperChips programmer and it did some wonders. But some of it is the improvement in our electronic tranny we have on the 4.7 which you would not notice anything on your shift.
Programming the PCM could help. But with what you have, you don't HAVE to.
Maybe some V6 guys will chime in.

Message: i have a 2000 dakota 2wd 3.9 v6 quad cab. i have already installed a cold air intake, relocated and switchable iat, taylor wires, autolite double platinum plugs, throttle body spacer, and 40 series flowmaster single in/dual out exhaust. i have noticed a definate difference in power. when i bought the truck, i got about 17mpg because the quad cab is a heavy truck. i now get about 20mpg and i can walk off on a v6 sh$t 10 or ranger. after doing these upgrades a chip would help make my mods better but for a stock motor, a chip probably wont do anything more than put a hurtin on your wallet. if you are looking to upgrade anything, start with exhaust and intake. everybody likes the sound of a mean exhaust, but anything you can do to make your truck breathe in or out better will make the most difference in a stock truck.
