Subject: Superchips octane level?

Message:
I plan on getting the superchips programer for my 01 durango with the 4.7. I want to know if I am going to run the the performance level that requires 93 octane, do I have to fill my tank with 93 before I install it?, because I just run 87 octane now.

Also does anyone know were I can get the 20" R/T wheels? thanks.

The documentation that came my tuners specified 91 octane for the two performance programs. I ran my tanks to less than 2 gallons of 87 octane remaining then filled with 91, tuned them, then drove them without any pings. (2002 4.7/NV3500 Dakota QC, 2001 4.7/45RFE Durango)

I'm pretty sure you'll get pinging if you tune, then fillup (with 91/93) after driving around on 87. Others have reported those results.

'round here, premium is 93 oct. The mid grade is 89. I often run the towing, or perf on the 89 octane, and bogging it while accelerating around 15-1700 rpms, it'll ping a little, till it gets over 19-2, then no more!

I do have a manual though, may make a difference.

Did you know that on my Dak, the difference b/t the 87 octane, and perf running 93, was only 4-5hp?!? I put down 218hp, w/o the SC's tuner at all, at the RW's.

Just run the 87 octane program until the next fill. It will give a chance to evaluate both programs. It only takes a few minutes to switch from one to the other which is its biggest advantage over having your computer flashed.

Yup. But we think we figured Todd's improvement over some others.
It is said that the 5 speed MANUAL has more factory advance than the 5 speed auto :p

I noticed a GOOD improvement (according to the butt dyno) just running the 87 setting over stock. My truck DID ping something pretty good when I ran 89 octane and the 91 setting.
Now I'm running full 91 octane and the 91 setting. I don't think I've noticed much difference form the 87 to the 91 setting. Maybe there is slight ignition advance. All around however, the 87 setting does wonders over stock for an auto. Mine shifts hard as a mo fo now. I LIKE it!

GraphiteDak, did you notice a change in the shift pattern even under normal acceleration?

Not anyhting I can obviously tell. In other words, it didn't screw it up.

I think the 1st to 2nd may not be quite as quick to jump right into 2nd so early when on light throttle so that may be better as well.

And of course full throttle is awesome!

Does your torque converter lockup before or after going into OD?
