I'm about to get a new Dana Trac-loc for my 2004 Dakota w 8,000+ miles on it. I call up my god-father and he wants $500+ to install it. And he says that I dont need new bearings due to it being still new. But the dealer wants $300+ but tells me I need to replace the bearings. So, I dont know who is blowing smoke up my ass. If someone could tell me how easy it is. I would do it myself. But I would need some help and list of tools.

Unless your a experienced mechanic leave it alone. Don't mean to offend. It's just that you have to get the backlash set right or you'll trash the gears.

How easy is it. You jack it up. Take off the rear tires. Remove the rear cover. Remove the spider gear pin. Push the axles in. Remove the C-clips. Slide the axles out. Using a special tool from Chrysler that looks like a inside out socket about 1-1/2" diameter on a long rod go in through the axle tubes and back off the carrier adjusters a couple of turns. Slide out the carrier. Take ring gear off old carrier and install on new one. Note: use locktite on ring gear bolts. Reverse the above to assemble it setting the backlash at the manufacturers spec. (Sorry I can't remember right off hand but approx. .002-.008 I think).
It's not really a hard job for an experienced mechanic but for someone who hasn't ever done it it might be overwhelming.
$500 is redicoulous. $300 at a dealer ain't bad. I know a guy who does it for $100 plus parts. If he installs new gears it's $125 plus parts. Probably the reason the dealer said replace the bearings is it takes 1/2 hr. to press them off and then there's no guarantee one won't be damaged from pressing. New bearings don't cost much over 1/2 hrs. worth of labor. Better off to replace them.

t-racy,

I've got a CD Dodge manual, but haven't looked this up yet.

I'm a pretty good machanic, my own HO cam install, etc.

If you alreay have the LSD from the factory, and it still works great after4+ years, isn't it even easier to change the ratio. As in 3.55 to 3.92? I've got the manual, so my 3.55 in 1st, is about like an auto w/ 3.92's in 1st.

usually a posi unit only takes 1-2 hours max.(dakota,Durango,8.25&9.25) to install. if the used one only has 8000miles.the bearings should be great shape, only need to change the ring gear from one to the other, reset the backlash, retorque all the bolts to specs, new axles seals would be a good idea.

Play it safe and take it to a installer that will stand by their work. A warranty would be perfect. I paid $250 for parts and $200 for labor for about 3.5 hours of work. Couldn't be happier with it. If a dealership is quoting you $300 I would ask if that is "out the door" because they have a tendancy to hit you with extras.
