Subject: axle wrap IP: Logged
Message: i have a 2003 rc 4x4 with several mods on it, and i have been experiencing a little axle wrap when i punch the throttle or on wet roads. i have helper springs on there, but they dont solve the problem. i have been trying to look in to getting some type of tork bars, kicker bars, or a link system, but i havent been able to find anything universal bolt on or vehical specific. any sugestions?

Message: Are you using the helper springs on the FRONT of the axle, on the front part of the leaf springs?
I am, and I noticed in deep sand on the beach near Matagorda TX, that when my friend, (ground crew for the Great Texas Catamaran Race, seen on PIsailing.com) reversed, it wrapped and hopped even in the sand, but going forward, smooth as silk.

Message: It doesn't sound like axle wrap is your problem. Axle wrap occurs when then the tires get more traction that your suspension can handle, causing the rear spring to bend into an S shape. When the springs snaps back into it's normal shape, the rear end bounces. That happens when traction is at it's best - clean dry pavement, traveling straigh ahead, with sticky tires.
What you have is intermittant loss of traction at the contact patch when traction is somewhat limited (wet roads). You could replace the springs with a solid bar and the same thing would continue to happen. You need a differant approach.
First off, you should consider a better wet weather tire, one that gets better traction at the contact patch. You might even try lowering the pressure a few pounds on your current tires.
Second, you should consider a suspension change that will plant the tires hardfer. Carrol Shelby developed an under rider traction bar for the Mustang that actually works. It's simple enough to make on in your garage to fit any leaf spring vehicle.
If your wheel hop only occursto the inside wheel in corners, you should consider changing your LSD to an Auburn.

Message: the wheel hop (or whatever) started when i put the Power trax no slip traction differential on. i have a pair of super springs on there, which is essentially like an add a leaf kit. i put that on a year before the power trax and i could notice the increased traction, and better cornering abilities with that but when i put the power trax in when ever i punch it there is a brief thrumping sound, like wheel hop, for a few seconds. ive tried taking the supersprings off, and adding weight (sand bags) but the sound doesnt deminish much. I think i will try your way of lowering the tire pressure a bit. i also have just the stock all terains on there, and i remember once someone i work with saying that they werent a really good tire. so i will thin kabout that too. thanks! :-)

Message: That thump you hear is the powertrax locking in. It works just like a Detroit locker and they all did that too that's why they're un-popular with so many people. They actually work good though. Just alot of people don't like the thump. The only thing you can do to rid the thump is remove the powertrax and put in a limited slip unit.

| really? thanks T-racy IP: Logged
Message: Really? I can hear the power trax lock in sometimes when i power through a sharp turn, but it is more like a single click, that thumping always sounded more like the tires bouncing up and then being slamed back into the ground rapidly. no wonder nothing anyone told me would fix wheel hop worked. i think i will still put some better wet weather tires on though like .boB suggested. thanks T-racy
