Subject: 5-speed questions... IP: Logged
Message: Right, I've got a 2000 Dakota with the V-6 5-speed setup. I'm really happy with the engine/transmission combo, but the throw on the shifter is a tad long (Truck like, who'd figure?) and seems to interfer with my 1-liter bottle of Mt Dew in the cup holder! :0)
I've been told you can adjust the linkage and shorten the throw, but I'd like to know if anyone has done that, or heard about it, before I take a wrench to the tranny. Anyone? Seems like it'd be good for lopping some time off my 1/4! Speaking of which, I have to get that timed. Driving and checking a stopwatch is no good at all *L*

Message: Todd,
If you can afford it, I would go with a hurst shifter. I believe that you have the nv-3500 transmission, but not positive, and hurst makes a shifter for this. I would've gladly put one on my truck, but for some reason the hurst doesn't fit well in a 2001 from what I have heard. However, from what I've heard it fits 2000 models well. It shortens the throw by 30% and gives a MUCH more solid feel when you are shifting. I believe it costs around $160 which in my opinions is worth it. Check it out: http://www.mrgasket.com/hurstnew.htm

According to that site, the shifter is for nv-3500 trannies on V8s. I'm supposing the 3.9 has the same bolt pattern for linkup to the trany as the V8s, but can anyone confirm that the 2000 5-speed is a NV-3500? Or, better yet, tell me what to look for? :0P

I believe the transmission you have is the AX-15 which is the same 5 speed tranny used in '97 - '99 v6 Dakota's as well. Hurst makes a shifter for AX-15 trannies and it's part number 391-5050. The v8 (NV3500) shifter will not work on the AX-15 trannies.
I bought mine through Jegs.com and it was a snap to install. The throw is definitely shorter, but the "notchiness" is still there. Check out the install and more notes at www.intense99dak.com/shifterknob.htm
