Anyone done a homebrew CAT back on a Dak using mandrel bends? I'm getting a Dynomax Ultra Flo SS muffler tomorrow and am still contemplating how to connect it, stock tail pipe or dumped in front of the tire, guess I'll see how it sounds with out the tail pipe disconnected. I looked at mandrel bent CAT back systems but cringed at the $400 price tag.

Then it hit me, why not get some $20, 2 1/2" mandrel bends from Summit, a few feet of straight pipe and weld up my own mandrel bent CAT back. $80-100 for the bends & pipe plus the $65 muffler should make for a nice $150 CAT back exhaust.

Might just be a pipe dream though,,, the only CAT back's I've seen with DYNO improvements are 3" systems. Heck I haven't even seen a 2 1/2" CAT back for the Dak's, maybe a 2 1/2" CAT back doesn't show significant improvements.

What ya think?

Cat back exhaust are really only for sound or show. Even with a 3 inch cat back you will not see a performance gain any larger than a couple HP. The largest restriction in our dakotas is in the Y pipe. Some are crimped together at the Y, others have baffles in the Y pipe. The 1 7/8" press bent piping doesn't help much either.

I think you have the right idea though. If you can weld i would just do a muffler swap. I bought a universal flowmaster tailpipe that is 2.5" and mandrel bent. I used a magnaflow muffler. I saw no gain in HP on the butt dyno(i did not do a real dyno). Currently my exhaust is just dumped after the axle. After one winter the aluminized pipe started to rust. So i just took part of the three section tail pipe off. With the tailpipe dumped it is a little more loud and more throaty, than when it went all the way out the back. Later on i may have a tailpipe reinstalled. It does not sound as "clean" with the tailpipe dumped. With my magnaflow there was/is no drown while cruising with a tailpipe or the exhaust dumped.
