Ok once again I am confused. I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I like to ask questions. I keep seeing a lot of post about people going from 3.55 to 3.92 or 4.1. Is the 3.92 gears not common on a stock dak? I have them so this is why I'm curious.

They are an upgrade or option. Most trucks came with the 3.2 somethings or 3.55 gears. The V6 5 speed Daks, the ones dealers had tons of, were 3.2x and the autos were 3.55. As far as the V8's go, I'm not sure. I think just 3.55 and 3.92. I have a 4.7 with the 3.92 LSD and 5 speed.

Dealers buy vehicles from the factory on spec. They buy what they think will sell. Most of the people buying trucks will never use them as trucks, only as daily transport. Unfortunatly, they also want good gas mileage to go with that 4,000# V8 truck. So the 3.55 gears sell better.

How much do the gears effect ur gas mileage? I get decent mileage compared to my dad's dakota but I also just have the V6.

All 1989 Shelby Dakotas came factory stock with 3.90 gearing. Spirited highway and city driving returned 15 mpg. I always knew it was time for a tune-up when it dropped to 13 mpg.

I had a '92 5.2 RC 3:55 auto that got 17.5 mpg overall. The '01 4.7 RC 3:92 manual 5-spd I now own gets 19.5 to 20.5 city, and 19.5 highway. The mods I did were with an eye to MPG; helping, or not hurting, MPG. HO cams/ Bosch 4418 plugs/ alloy intake tube between "true" 68mm TB and airbox, with K&N drop-in and 6" Fernco inlet/ 2 1/2" pipes after pre-cats/ Magnaflow 2 1/2"-to-3" Y-pipe/ Carsound 3" cat/ Flowmaster 70 with 2 1/4" duals/ Mobil1 5w-30/ Amsoil synthetic in LSD/ Snugtop cab-hi shell/ 3/2 chassis drop/ 30% 93 octane with 87 mix. All Dakota R/T's had 3:92 rears. If you have a 4.7 5-speed, most likely you have the 9.25" rear end as well.
