I have an 1989 Dakota long box. it's an automatic /overdrive.
my question is the tranny has gone totaly out it only has 1st gear left. the motor has 150,000 miles on it and still runs like a champ. but i want to know where i can get it rebuilt cheep and also add some performance to my Dakota.
I thought of putting a 318 with a strong tranny in it. but i just don't know what to do.
Also i've heard alot that the trannys in the first Gen. dakota's with overdrive don't last to long.
I really want to make my Dakota a real street machine at a lower cost.

Please help.....

Hmmm....good question. I have 120,000 miles on my 1989 4x4, and the engine and tranny just purrs like a Tiger. I cannot help you if you want a 318, but I know there are other Generation I guys who can. If you seek another tranny, consider:

I'm sure a phone call to them will answer some of your questions and maybe be able to point you in the right direction.

Its a start....

Elliot, The early OD trans had multiple problems that were addressed year by year until around 1993. Your tans is probably rebuildable, but your OD unit is probably toast, and it is expensive. Depending on your budget, you have a lot of options. The least expensive and simplest would probably be a 318 3-speed (990 or 999) auto combo. You could rebuild both with mods for less than $2000 and see 14 sec quarters. How much effort do youwant to put into it?
