I know where everything else is except for that.
Thanks fellas

Message: Actually to paraphrase the original question I believe your asking which T-Stat is the best one to get? Robert Shaw is the best however looks like they stopped making them. There is a lot of differences in stats and it would be good to get it right the first time. Shaw was the best and in HVAC is the standard that is likely why they are so good. Smart@ss3 is closer than he knew. Next up would probably be a Stant superstat from what I have read. Either way I would test it in boiling water on the stove with a thermometer before installing just to verify opening point.

Message: MNMike, I beg to differ about Robertshaw (one word, not Robert Shaw) being the "best" and it was never the "standard" in HVAC. There never really was a standard. We've used Shaw, but mostly Barber Coleman stats, controls (pneumantic and DDC), ect where I work. (34 years in the HVAC business) For the money, Honeywell is tops. Or el cheapo white/rodgers. You see MNMike, I know..........
If you test your auto tstat with boiling water as MNMike suggests, I would hope it opens before the boiling point!!!!! I would boil the water first, drop it in, then read the thermometer to see where it closes. You will probably get a false reading with the thermometer in the water while the pan in on the flame.

Message: Robert Shaw makes a HIGH FLOW thermostat. Its only a couple extra bucks and helps the coolant flow. If your motor has mods it might be worth checkin out.

Message: Once again, it's "Robertshaw" and not "Robert Shaw". It is sold at the dealerships as a high end product, and certainly was in the past. I don't see them in most stores now. Stant was always a good name, too.
Robertshaw and Barber Colman were both bought by Invensys in the 1990s. That's a British holding company that sucks the money out of good companies and leaves their lifeless carcasses by the roadside. They also bought Lambda power supply, Foxboro Company, Elmwood Sensors, Fenwall, and Exide battery, to name a few. Check out how these companies have suffered and quality gone to hell since.

Message: Well damn, guess pissed in some Cheerios so better clarify. After you replace it you will understand why you want to make sure yours works correctly BEFORE you put it in. Also the Temp it opens is important. Start to open at 178-180 and fully open at 185.
When I said test in boiling water what you need to do is ideally test in a double bottom pot. If you don’t have one hang it on a wooden spoon across the top of the pot with a cotton thread suspending it. Gradually raise your water temp checking with a thermometer located at the same depth again not touching the sides or bottom. It isn’t rocket science, hell if it was anyone could do it. At least that is what Nuclear Engineers have been saying for years. Retired 10 years ago after 20 years in the Navy doing essential Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow. Nuclear Reactors to Lithium Bromide cooling systems. And we never had Honeywell controls for control systems in a severe environment and combat survivability that I was in. They have electronic guidance control systems for missiles (mainly backup) and torpedoes. And don’t get me started on their QA having done Electronic contract manufacturing with them as a customer. Yeah residential they are all over although less so lately and I once in awhile get shanghaied into doing a home system. Last 10 years have had enough field techs tell me problems with them that I refuse to install them anymore. Mainly 6-10 year failure. Will grant that many units do use “Honeywell model XXX or equivalent” so that would be a standard, although I still don’t consider it a high one. Last 2 control systems I was involved with were Andover Control System. Honeywell Controls fell short. I now do computer systems and try not to look back but sometimes hard not to.

Message: Well MNMike, we were talking bout common use, I do believe most people on this site are not 20 year vets working on high tech $hit. I work for the US Gov. myself, at a VA hospital and all the "brands" I mentioned are what is common in the civilian world. We also use controls that the average person never heard of, like "Tracer/Summit" ect. PS: I just replaced a Heat Pump system in a resident Saturday, I replaced their 25 year old Honeywell with a new one to go along with the new system. It lasted more than the 6-10 year failure you suggest.

Message: It's a thermostat, you aren't buying a new house. It's a $5 part. I
can't believe there are any differences worth debating between
every single thermostat manufacturer out there. Just buy one and
get on with your life already.
