Just changed my oil today and put in Quaker State Synthetic 5W30, this one to be exact:(http://www.quakerstate.com/pages/products/oil_synthetichighhorse.asp). I see alot of posts on here about synth and just wanted to know what the main benefit is? It was certainly a lot more expensive than normal oil, but if its worth it for my engine, I have no problems with that.

Message: Synthetic Oil has two major benefits: 1. It does not break down or not nearly as fast as normal oil depending on exactly what oil you use. 2. A quality synthetic is far better at lubricating, ie. it lowers the friction in your engine. Now even though it does not break down like regular oil, you must still change it because it will get contaminates in it.

I'm not the Amsoil Guy,
but,
I don't think that oil is a true synthetic. Just a re-worked, dino oil. There are very few true synthetics.

Message: The best filter for the money is a good filter.
Now, the absolut best filters, are: Amsoil, K&N and Mobil,(w/out modifying anything).
The advantages of synt. oils are inumerous.
Here is just a few.
- They maintain their original viscosity or close to it longer.
-Much better resistence to all causes of oil brake down,(heat, oxidation, evaporation, etc).
For these reazons and others, the engine will be cleaner and no sludge will develop.
-Much better lubrication due to a lot smaller mollecules from a true syntetic bases, (some, not all).
Come on Mr Amsoil. Take this over and how is my learning going?
Peace.

Message: I'm running Mobil1 that has over 5000 miles on it, checked it today and it looks like maple syrup. At 7000, I will change the filter, top up and go another 7000, then change the oil. Twas my second oil change at 6000 miles when I went to the M1 and I will not turn back.
Don't forget to check these guys out...

Message: Generally the type of oil you use doesn't matter. I'm not saying go put something in it for .90 a quart, but if you get a good oil for a good price and check it regularly and so on, you will be fine. Synthetics are good oils, if you get the right brands. Valvoline and some others are not "true" synthetics as many people will tell you, I leanred the hard way. I now run AMSOIL and wouldn't use anything else. I had an analysis done with about 6,000-7,000 miles on it and it came back very good. It's all in how much you want to spend and how long you plan on keeping your car. If you want to run it till it dies, get a good synthetic because the engine will last a long time.

Message: I have been running Penz 10w30 (5w30 in winter) synthetic with a Fram Xtraguard from the first oil change when the truck was new. The last oil change (at 98500 miles!) I switched to Royal Purple with a K&N just to try it out. With Penz, at about 3500 miles, the oil was black. Right now I have about the same on the Purple and the oil is dark but you can still see through it on the dip stick. With the Royal Purple and the K&N it’s a $50 oil change, but I say it’s worth it. I have 102,000 (+/-) on the truck now and it’s still runs like a bat out of hell!

Message: That is a wise decision to get away from the Fram oil filters. They are pretty much all crap.
The only filters I could get at Autozone that are really good and would fit my truck was the Mobil 1.
Where do you get those K&N oil filters? I've heard really good things about them as well.

Message: I use the guidelines in my manuals and usually go 7500 miles on my oil before changing it. Black oil is not necessarily bad oil.
I've had 4 different vehicles (Olds Delta 88/350 cid,Chevy S-10/4.3, Ford F-150/351 Windsor, Stratus/2.4) all well over 100,000 miles and none of them had any problems related to wear. They all got the same or better mileage later in their lives than early on, say once past 30,000.
The Stratus is still my daily drive (my wife drives our 2005 Dak 3.7 Quad Cab) and gets 35 mpg and still had great compression when I had it in the shop 20,000 miles ago.
I've used synthetic in my motorcycles and have noticed better mileage and easier starting but since I change the oil at the beginning and end of each riding season it never got old anyway.
I've pointed out to many people that their owners manuals say 7500 miles between changes unless they drive in extremes. Stop and go driving is not like making trips across town and hitting 2 or 3 lights - it's like driving a delivery vehicle or cab - it's hell on your engine because the idling makes the oil pressure so low you don't get good lubrication.
The only people I see pushing for 3000 mile oil changes are the oil manufacturers. Having your oil analyzed occasionally is good to check on your engine condition.
I am planning on putting synthetic in the Dak here on it's first oil change and putting on a good filter. I also plan on changing it no sooner than 7500 miles - per the owners manual. I will probably go longer after I get it analyzed a few times and get the feel for how it's working.

Message: The owner’s manual for my 2000 Dak shows 2 service schedules. Schedule “A” states every 7500 miles, schedule “B” states every 3000 miles. The 2 different schedules are based on driving conditions. I drive about 40 – 50 miles a day on mostly county type roads with a total of 5 stop signs/lights on my 20 mile drive to and from work at an average speed of around 55 mph. So I can’t say it’s freeway nor stop-and-go driving. I change the oil and filter between 3000 – 4000 miles. I rotate the tires at every oil change. I also get gas BEFORE the needle is on the “E”. Yes, this may be over kill and it’s not what the owner’s manual suggests, but this is what I do. I’m from the “old school” of dino oil where I was taught that black oil means lots of suspended contaminants so I start thinking about changing it when it gets to that point. As I said earlier it has 102000+ miles, doesn’t use a drop of oil and it runs like a bat out of hell. I fully intend on keeping it for another 100K miles. Long live Dakotas!! LOL!!

Message: Cut open a fram filter after its used on 3000+ miles.... not much of the filter is left. Same thing with a lot of these cheaper filters. I agree with Timberwolf on that. Ive pulled off a purolater filter after 7k+ miles it not only was there there no sludge on the pickup it was heavy like a brick. Point being, it filterd out far more contaminets than anything else. So dont always go cheap. Remember cheap price = cheap filter that breaks down... you get what you pay for.
About the oil change schedule.... every 3-7k miles is best for maximum engine life. Then again i dont like having to replace my cars especially my dak so i end up doing it every 2.5k. It's not a manufacturer thing though, its a proven thing. and no black oil is not nescarilly bad. Its only black because of the blowby gasses passing through your piston rings. When its like molasses, regardless of color its bad.
Oil, well theres a lot of crap to say about it. Sythetics, in my experience are worth the money. Ive seen an engine (2001 Toyota Camry) Run on nothing but synthetic oil. And this customer of mine religously gets everything done when its needed. When i had to replace a piston ring on the customers camry, his engine was still so clean i could still see the the cross hatching on the bore. Point being synthetic is a little better.
but thats just my .02
