Subject: Absolutes for nitrous... IP: Logged
Message: I'm very seriously considering getting N20. I've got a '98 Dak w/ a totally stock 5.2L. I'd be getting the Compucar "Bag O' Nitrous" kit. 10# bottle in duffle bag (damn sneaky..hehe). Comes with 5 jets for 20-100HP shots. Of course the lower shots would be okay. But, if I wanted to run a 100 shot...what would be a MUST to prevent killing my engine? ;-) Friend of mine thinks just adjusting the timing would do it, I'm not so sure and want to be safe. I'd eventually get all the little things to be extra safe...just want to know the ABSOLUTES for now. Thanks in advance.

Message: There are some modifications that should be done first before using Nitrous Oxide. (Not required...but you need to cover the basics before adding Nitrous, Blowers, Turbos, etc. to any "stock? engine.)
(1) Cold Air Intake System (K&N Gen-II or Intense performance)
(2) Modified Throttle Body (50mm Flometrics or Fastman)
(3) Headers (JBA, Mopar, Gibson)
(4) A good flowing cat-back system (Gibson, Flowmaster, Dynomax, etc.)
(5) 180 Degree thermostat
(6) One heat range colder spark plug (Autolite 3923 - Gapped at no more than .038" for Nitrous)
(7) A good ignition system (at least replace the factory coil but MSD preferred - You WILL need a timing retard system for the 100HP shot and higher)
Again, adding Nitrous to a stock intake, exhaust is not going to give you the full effect/performance.

You WONT need a timing retard for the 100 shot most likely. Try it without first, and THEN buy one IF you need it. I have been running a 100 shot on my 5.2 for 2 months now, with Mopar PCM (advances timing), and have had no need to retard the timing. Sold my timing retard on Ebay 2 weeks ago (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=592485398&r=0&t=0) because I didnt need it. Bernds V6 needs it, our V8's dont.

Message: You also wont need #1-3 off Bernds list. That can come later.

Message: You may not NEED all of Bernds list but I think it's pretty accurate of what SHOULD be done prior to Nitrous.
I went the same route though I went with a blower. The PCM was flashed originally by Leach for the Blower and he retarded the shit out of the timing. I plan on ditching the timing retard and going with either an MSD BTM or something similar to adjust easily on the fly. A dyno would really help but I'm about to have to go out of town for most of this month for work.
I'd put on most of that list before I messed with the funny gas. Just my 2 cents...
